Meet your guide at your hotel on the Guanacaste coast and drive roughly 90 minutes inland to the private Heliconia Rain Forest reserve at the foothills of the Tenorio Volcano. Begin your tour with an easy hike along a 1.3-mile (2.2-kilometer) trail, taking many stops over the course of two hours to admire the tropical flora. The walk will include four bridges over the rain forest canopy ranging from 114- to 131-feet (35- to 40-meters) high, providing an excellent opportunity to observe birds, butterflies, and bromeliads and to look out over the lush landscape.
Then, your guide will lead you through the reserve’s nature trails, pointing out favorite hang-out spots for wild sloths, monkeys, snakes, owls, and birds in their natural habitats. Afterward, visit two greenhouses, including a tropical nursery and herb and vegetable growing site, and then proceed to a butterfly garden where you can learn about the butterfly lifecycle. End your tour with a taste of fresh coffee grown on-site before returning to your accommodation on the coast.
