After hotel pickup in Playa del Carmen, you will head to the Tulum Ruins to explore this archaeological site. Each Mayan city had a specific purpose, and Tulum was no exception. It was a seaport, trading mainly in turquoise and jade. As well as being the only Mayan city built on a coast, Tulum was one of the few protected by a wall. Made of limestone, the 2500+ foot (784 m) wall encloses the site on three sides, is almost 23 feet (7 m) thick, and varies from 10-16 feet (3-5 m) in height.

There are several theories as to why a wall surrounds Tulum. One suggests it was built to protect the Mayan population of 600 inside from invaders. Another suggests only priests and nobility were housed within the walls, while peasants were kept on the outside. You will see important places like the House of Cenote, mysterious Temple of the Wind God, beautiful Temple of Paintings and Tulum’s tallest building, The Castle. With essential background knowledge provided by the archaeologist guide, you’ll easily imagine how this city once served as a major seaport. You can also jump in the water at its beautiful beach and enjoy the unique view of the ruins from the water.

After the tour, head to Cenote Dos Ojos which is a flooded cave system located south of Playa Del Carmen and north of Tulum. The documented underwater extent of the cave system is at least 200 feet (61 km) deep. Dos Ojos remains in the top 10 longest underwater caves systems in the world and its name is Spanish for “Two eyes”, referring to two neighboring cenotes which connect into a very large cavern zone shared between the two. Snorkel at this wonderful place and then head back to your hotel. Your tour also includes lunch and beverages.
