We were picked up promptly at our hotel at 8AM by our knowledgeable and entertaining guide, Filipe. With a full van after a couple of other pick-ups, we zoomed north out of Porto to the stunning Douro Valley, stopping first at a winery for a lesson in making wine and some tastings. Lunch followed at a restaurant with wine, authentic food (can you say tripe?) and fantastic views, and then another winery where we learned about making port. And some tastings. A one-hour cruise on the Douro River was next, and more port was served. The boat was more authentic than luxurious, but fun and scenic. I'm not sure anyone didn't fall asleep on the ride home. One note that Viator should include is that it can get quite hot in the Valley. Many people were overdressed. Thanks, Filipe! Thanks, Viator!
Our guide, Ivo, picked us up at each hotel by a van, drove us for 1 1/2 hour to mountain, had 3 course lunch (including wine, of course!), and he took us to 2 vineyards (1 for white/red wine, another for port). After wine tasting, we cruised on Douro river by boat for 45 minutes, which may have been highlight of this tour... It was small group of 8, with such nice and friendly people--on top of that, luckily the weather was just gorgeous! Had such a fantastic day, Well-worth 98 USD! Thanks to Ivo--you are the best! I recommend this tour to anyone who loves wine and good time :)
Sergio was a great guide. Very personable, full of very useful information and an excellent guide for the day. He was such a good driver that everyone felt quite comfortable sleeping on the way home! lol. Although it was a bit warm we still enjoyed the winery tours. Especially the first one where the winery was over 500 years old. We were able to do our tasting in the beautiful garden in the shade. The lunch was very authentic. The fish was our favorite and although had plenty of bones was very tasty. The matching white wine was nice. It was a bit warm by the time we got to the second winery but the guide was very entertaining and kept the outside component of the tour to the minimum. Perhaps doing the port tasting inside in this case would have been a better idea. All in all a great day out.
We had a great time on the tour, our tour guide Sara was great. They were on time to pick us up early in the morning. After an hour drive we were in the Douro Valley. Sara was telling us all about the history and interesting facts throughout the ride about all the landmarks we passed and about the Douro Valley. The two quintas that hosted us were absolutely beautiful and we got more wine than we were expecting! Special shout out to our host Agusta at Vintage Theory who showed us one of the best times on the tour! If I am ever back in Porto, I will absolutely going back to Douro Valley with this tour company!
We had a wonderful time with Ivo our guide spent getting to know why the Douro Valley is special. In a small group (8) of English language speakers we travelled in a comfortable van. We travelled via the modern motorway to the Doro Valley where we visited two very different wineries, tasted wines, cheeses and jams made on each estate. The first was a very old estate but with a modern stainless steel equipment for making white, red and port wines. The second was also very old but had retained traditional methods, including the foot stamping of the grapes. Between the two wineries, lunch was served at a lovely restaurant high on the slopes of the Douro River Valley. Lunch consisted of savory starters and olives, sardines or chicken for mains and creme brulee to follow. Drinks included white and red wine and water. Lunch was filling and delicious. The visits to the wineries was complemented by a trip by boat on the river which gave another perspective of the beautiful valley. All in all this was great value and a good way to understand more about what makes this part of Portugal so special. We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and complement Ivo on his skill as both driver and guide. We would gladly recommend this day trip to others as good value for money.
Our guide was very nice, the valley is beautiful. The Douro river is scenic. However we were disappointed that at the Quintas that we visited that they only allowed us to taste their lowest quality wines and port. Where we had lunch was scenic, but the quality of the food was disappointing.
If your priority is good food and tasting good wines and ports, then this would not be the tour for you. If your priority is nice views and getting drunk, then you may find that this fits the bill perfectly.
The most important features of a tour are the destination and the guide. Both were absolutely first class. A truly amazing landscape and a guide to match. Carla is so good at what she does and a very delightful human being. We could not have asked for any more even in the face of unexpected difficulties she remained calm, funny and a pleasure to be with. CongratulationsCMTourPortugal.
Pick up and drop off went smoothly and the wine tasting and lunch were ok. The river cruise is nothing. The main issue is the long drive on twisty roads which means that, if you are in the back of the van, you spend a long time being thrown about.
Ivo was great - now only as a winemaker who knew all the intricacies of the process, but also as a great source of a wide variety of information about customs, traditions, and overall way of life.

Our guide, Ana, was very pleasant and informative. The Quintas she took us to were quaint. Unfortunately they only provided their lowest quality wines and port to taste. For some in our group this did not seem to make much difference as they did not seem to care for much for the quality of what they were drinking -- only the amount (which after a while (their drunkenness) made them somewhat unpleasant to share the ride with). Lunch, although adequate and at an attractive location, left much to be desired. My advice would be that if you are interested in wine and food, to choose a different tour. If you are simply interested in nice views, learning a little, and getting drunk, you may find this tour appealing.
