Worthwhile

We always love the HOHO buses in new cities and the Porto one is very good. We feel like we saw more of the city than we would have otherwise. One bus tour takes you round the main parts of the town (incl dropping you at the boat trip) & the other goes away out to where the beaches are so you can spend 2hrs there before the next bus returns. The boat trip is a nice 40 mins long. Only negatives for me: no announcements of stops (we missed one!). The driver doesn’t stop unless you press the bell (or there’s someone at a stop waving them) so if you don’t know what the stop coming up is how do you know to press the bell ? I would recommend the 48hr ticket incl boat so you have time to do it all. Two tours at 1.5 hrs & 2hrs in one day is quite a lot so best to spread it out over at least two days. Oh and where to get the boat is not evident but if you look for Cafe Do Caia at Ribeira it’s next to that.

Worth it

Had 48 hours on yellow with 2 routes. Helpful to get around but wish they would announce stops like “stop #4”. On second day our transfer for Douro tour took 45 minutes to arrive so we ran out of time for wine tour after Douro river tour. Disappointing. Matosinhos is a must see for lunch if you like fish and seafood

1 day in Porto

If you have only 1 day in Porto, and want to hit major spots, hop on/hop off is not the ideal way to get around, specially, during off-peak season. The buses come every 30-40 minutes, and that's not close to rush hour times of the day. They are unpredictable at times. Wait times are really long. And the last trip is at 530pm...so, you will have to rely and pay for public transportation to see the rest of the sites. However, if you don't feel you need to get off at every stop, riding it around to see the whole city is perfect. Specially if you're tired walking those hilly streets. Not all seats have the best connection for hearing the commentaries...so it's a hit or miss experience. The buses are clean, the drivers are nice...they smoke a lot! And they don't know the purple line information if you're on the orange line bus, and vice versa.

We used the Yellow HoHo twice round Porto. It was excellent and I would recommend it although the free WiFi wasn’t working.

This combination was great value for money. The boat trip was really lovely and the whole family enjoyed it. The port tasting experience was very interesting and entertaining and the port was delicious.

Two very nice routes. Fabulous boat ride and winery tour are included and worth the cost all on their own. You can walk from the boat ride to the winery easily without having to get back on the bus which saves waiting time. This time of year it was never too crowded and they came every half hour consistently.

Amazing value for money. The cellar tour was well worth the visit - the guide was brilliant and tasting the port was a bonus. The relaxing cruise was also informative. The bus tour was good although some audio pads didn’t work but we just moved seats. Again very informative. The purple tour bus, which was the longer of the two, was far less frequent and did have to wait a while. However it was worth the wait as it took us up as far as the fantastic beach area. Really worth the money.

We rode the historic area bus first and switched to the castle bus. Then hopped off and never saw another bus during the afternoon. After over an hour wait we caught a taxi home.
