Your walking tour starts at the Pantheon, a Roman icon recognized by its stately columns. With your guide, an authority on Rome’s ancient history and archaeology, learn about its origins as a temple to honor the gods of Ancient Rome before it was rebuilt by Emperor Hadrian in 126 AD.

In continuous use since the 7th century, the Pantheon today operates as a Catholic church. Walk around the large Corinthian columns, made of granite, and go inside to take in the grandeur of the interior, particularly the unreinforced dome, one of the largest in the world. Then walk with your guide to Piazza di Pietra to see the 11 Corinthian columns that remain of the Temple of Hadrian, commissioned by Hadrian’s adopted son in 145 AD.

Finally, arrive at Santa Maria in Via Lata, a church built on top of the remains of a 5th-century chapel. Note the fine examples of Roman religious architecture before entering the underground crypt to see an ancient well where, legend says, fresh water ran in answer to St Paul’s prayers when he was imprisoned here before his trial.

Your tour ends at the church, which is located on Via del Corso, one of Rome’s main streets where you’ll be well placed to continue exploring the Eternal City on your own.
