Meet your guide at the Piazza di Spagna to begin your tour. Take in the bustle of activity that surrounds the square’s Fontana della Barcaccia (Fountain of the ‘Ugly Boat’) before walking up the 135 stairs that make up the Spanish Steps, one of Rome’s most iconic attractions.

As you climb, your guide will share interesting facts about the steps and their history in this part of Rome. Designed in the 18th century, the staircase links Piazza di Spagna with Piazza Trinità dei Monti at the top, where you’ll be rewarded with a view of the city and square below. Then continue your tour with a short walk south to the Trevi Fountain, pausing on the way to check out the Acqua Vergine, a still-functioning, centuries-old Roman aqueduct that was built to carried fresh water from the hills to the city’s many fountains.

When you reach the Trevi Fountain, admire its ornate baroque design, and, with your right hand, throw a coin over your left shoulder into the water, ensuring your return to the Eternal City someday. Then turn down an alley near the fountain to Vicus Caprarius, an ancient passageway leading beneath the Trevi Fountain, where you can see old Roman ruins. As you marvel at this subterranean archaeological site, hear from your guide what researchers have learned from these ruins about life in Imperial Rome from the 1st to 4th centuries.

Your tour the ends at the Trevi Fountain, from where you are free to continue exploring on your own.
