Make your own way to Mitai Maori Village to meet your Maori guide for your walking tour. The village is conveniently located only a few minutes from central Rotorua.

Your guide describes daily life for the Ngati Whakaue tribe at the base of Mount Ngongotaha, giving you insight into the ancient traditions of New Zealand (Aotearoa) before the Europeans arrived. See buildings around the village, including the pataka (food storehouse), whare (houses), whakairo (carvings), tu-watawata (palisading), and puhara (watch towers). Discover the uses for native plants and herbs in traditional rongoa (Maori medicine), and how they can cleanse toxins and heal wounds. Hear how Maori hunters utilized trapping tools such as hinaki (nets) and bird troughs to catch prey such as birds, fish and eels.

Visit the sacred spring, Waiwhakarukuhanga-atua (water where gods plunge), and hear legends about the underworld and patupaiarehe (fairies) that descended from Mount Ngongotaha to drink its waters. The Maori priests consulted with the gods at the spring before making plans for the future. Your guide offers you a drink of water from the sacred spring and a taste of rewana (Maori bread) made from a family recipe that has been in the Mitai family for more than one hundred years.

Your tour ends after 75 minutes with return to your starting point.
