Make your way to Exit 3 of the Shanghai Natural History Museum Station (Metro Line 13) to meet your guide and group at 2:30 p.m. Be sure to wear comfortable clothing and good walking shoes.
Begin with views of Shanghai's historic cathedral, then move on to the abandoned nong tangs, planned housing blocks bisected with narrow alleyways and decaying propaganda posters hinting at a lost culture. See some examples of normal streets where locals live, playing majhong on the street corners and going about their daily business. Visit the outdoor market where most locals do their shopping for daily groceries.
Walk over to the Shanghai Sports Bureau and the Park Hotel, both amazing examples of art deco architecture. Hit up Nanjing, the Times Square of Shanghai, and visit the marriage market (open weekends only) to see where local parents try to find mates for their children. In Nanjing Lu, take in the massive skyscrapers that have come to stand for the 'new' China, then walk down the back streets to try some of the street food (including a pan-fried dumpling). Visit the water's edge to see the Peace Hotel, then end your tour with a view of Pudong and grab a beer next to the Bund during sunset.
