Spot local wildlife as you proceed through the jungle and marshland, eventually reaching the settlement. You’ll get to observe residents as they go about daily tasks like fishing and washing clothes, and then take a boat ride and a “bullock cart” ride up to the home of a local family, who will prepare your lunch. After your meal you’ll head to the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site that dates back hundreds of years.
For full details of the day’s activities, please review the itinerary below.

6:30am: Get picked up from your hotel in Kandy and drive to the start of your village trek to Hiriwadun, which will take 3 hours

9:30am: Start your trek with your knowledgeable guide as he/she guides you on a trip to explore a typical Sri Lankan village. It starts with a walk along a man-made reservoir. The reservoir itself, the surrounding scrub jungle, marshland and village hum with activity in the early morning and evening. Look for bird life, butterflies and possible sightings of crocodiles, and observe the villagers as they go about their early morning tasks like fishing and washing clothes at the periphery of the lake. Continue your tour with a boat ride and a bullock cart ride up to a village house, where you will enjoy an authentic Sri Lankan lunch.

12pm - 1pm: Enjoy lunch at the village house. After lunch, you will be driven to visit Sigiriya Rock Fortress (approx. 30 minutes drive).

1:30pm- 4:30pm: Explore the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Sigiriya is famous for its toadstool of golden-hued granite, protruding into the searing blue sky from the surrounding wilderness of scrubland. During the rainy season, this rocky outcropping is transformed into a water garden. In the 5th century, King Kashyapa settled the site (also known as the "Lion's Rock") by building a palace atop its summit. It has now become one of the most-visited historic sites in all of Sri Lanka.

4:30pm: Leave Sigiriya and drive back to Kandy.

7pm: Drop-off at your hotel.

A very enjoyable day. The driver was excellent at spotting wildlife for us. We were a little disappointed with the guide as there was a lot of extra's we were offered, but he was not impressed when we refused. Village members and boat trip were excellent. Sigiriya is a tough climb and a degree of fitness is required. A nice way to see parts of Sri Lanka.
