Overview

Explore Sweden's wilderness on this 3-night adventure at Kolarbyn Ecolodge. Located in the scenic Bergslagen forest, the lodge features cozy huts, open cooking fires and tons of outdoor activities. Walk the nature trails to view wildlife and pick berries or swim and fish in the bucolic lake. Head out on Swedish-style safaris, which track moose and beavers instead of lions and tigers. Take a steam in the floating sauna and enjoy the fresh woodsy air. Upgrade to include round-trip transportation from Stockholm's Arlanda Airport or Central Station.

  • 3-night stay at Kolarbyn Ecolodge, known as Sweden’s most primitive hotel
  • Sleep in a cosy private hut deep in a lakeside forest
  • Chop firewood and cook your meals on an open fire
  • Enjoy two included evening safaris to seek out wild moose and beavers
  • Fish, swim, hike, forage or relax in the floating sauna hut — all as you wish
  • Travel independently to Kolarbyn or upgrade for an included transfer from Stockholm Central Station or Arlanda Airport
There are several ways to get to the remote Kolarbyn Ecolodge, located near Skinnsbatteberg in the Bergslagen forest. Drive by car from Stockholm, or take the 80-minute train from Stockholm's Central Station to Köping, then a 50-minute bus ride to Skinnskatteberg and a quick taxi transfer to the ecolodge. Opt to upgrade your tour for private transfer from Stockholm's Arlanda Airport or Central Station directly to Kolarbyn.
Arrive at Kolarbyn to find a cozy forest hut waiting for you. Your hut lacks running water and electricity, but has cozy sleeping bags, candles, a wood burning stove and oil lamps. Eco-friendly toilets are on site, and bathing means a dip in the lake or a steam in the floating sauna.
There's no set itinerary except a Moose Safari and campfire dinner on the second day and a Beaver Safari and campfire dinner on the third day. Otherwise, choose how you'd like to explore the region and cook your own food on the camp's firepits. A shared food shed offers eggs, pasta, museli and outdoor cooking supplies. Fresh water is available directly from the source: a pure forest well. Visit the supermarket 2 miles away for other fresh food items if you like.
After this true Swedish experience of wilderness, make your way back to Stockholm on your own or enjoy a private transfer.

Itinerary

Day 1: Skinnskatteberg, Stockholm Central Station or Stockholm Arlanda Airport – Kolarbyn Ecolodge
Arrive at Kolarbyn Ecolodge and check in. Meet your host for an introductory walk around the lodge camp, and settle into your cozy hut. Perhaps get acquainted with your idyllic surroundings with a short walk or swim in the lake.

When you’re peckish, head for the food shed and help yourself to the groceries provided, such as pasta, fruit and eggs. Snap up some provided outdoor cooking utensils while you're there. Then, fetch water from the well, chop some firewood and cook your first meal over the campfire. Finally, savor your al fresco supper to the chirrups of forest birds and rustle of red squirrels. Afterward, chat around the fire before hitting your sleeping bag!

Overnight: Kolarbyn Ecolodge

Day 2: Kolarbyn Ecolodge
Wake to the forest birdsong and perhaps take a dip in the lake before cooking your own breakfast. The day is yours to spend as you please. Perhaps go fishing, unwind in the floating sauna, or pick wild blueberries. You might even whip up blueberry pancakes for lunch!

Late this afternoon, join your guide for your included Moose Safari. Head for a nearby lake and enjoy dinner by a campfire before heading out on foot and by minivan to spot these magnificent wild animals. Your guide will track hoof prints, fresh droppings and bite marks, so keep your camera ready because sightings are frequent. Learn about the animals as you go and watch for other wildlife, such as roe deer and even lynx. When darkness falls, head back to your hut and let yourself be lulled to sleep by the sounds of the forest.

Overnight: Kolarbyn Ecolodge

Day 3: Kolarbyn Ecolodge
Cook breakfast and enjoy the day however you want. Perhaps explore the forest further, forage for mushrooms or berries, or follow the lakeside hiking trails. Cook lunch whenever you feel hungry — it’s completely up to you.

Later, meet your guide for your evening Beaver Safari. After a briefing on Sweden’s wildlife, don a life jacket and head onto a lake in a rubber boat. Glide silently over the water in search of these busy animals — your guide will know where to look! Break for supper around the campfire and then continue your quest and return to your hut at the end of the night.

Overnight: Kolarbyn Ecolodge

Day 4: Kolarbyn Ecolodge – Skinnskatteberg, Stockholm Central Station or Stockholm Arlanda Airport
Cook breakfast and maybe use your last morning to take a final lake swim or walk. Then, check out at a time that suits your schedule. If you’re traveling by train, enjoy an included taxi transfer to Skinnskatteberg.
