Ride the innovative RailBike from Taumarunui for a firsthand experience of the countryside of North Island. This active 4.5-hour tour is led by a guide who provides informative commentary, snacks, and all equipment for your 25-mile (40-km) round-trip ride. Pedal the 2-person RailBike on railway tracks that pass through five tunnels on this scenic portion of the 88-mile (142-km) rail line, the most expensive rail line built in New Zealand.
Make your own way to the departure location in Taumarunui for check-in and transfer by shuttle bus.
The 10-minute drive takes you to the start of the line at Okahukura where your guide provides a safety briefing for your RailBike journey. When ready, set off on the 2-seat RailBike. Powered by your pedaling, take on the first ascent, which is the steepest part of the 12.5-mile (20-km) one-way journey.
The RailBike is equipped with headlights that shine when you travel about one mile (1.5 km) underground, passing through five tunnels in total. You'll see rugged high country sheep farms and stretches of wilderness that offer sweeping views of the central north island volcanoes (on a clear day).
When you reach the turnaround point in the town of Matiere, your guide provides hot soup, baked treats, and a hot drink. Then enjoy the scenery as you ride back to Taumarunui.
