Start at the National Museum of American History that traces this course of US history through a unique collection of objects including the actual banner that inspired the country’s national anthem. Learn about the first president, George Washington, while viewing his sword and discover how Hollywood has helped shape this country when you check out Dorothy’s ruby red slippers. Visit the extensive collection of first ladies’ gowns to the Greensboro lunch counter that embodies the Civil Rights Movement. This tour will help you to understand the exciting and oftentimes controversial history behind this vast country.

After a break for lunch, experience the eclectic and iconic artworks of the National Gallery of Art where art by Renaissance artists, the French Impressionists, and great American painters can all be found under one roof. Our engaging guides will take you to their favorite piece by artists from Da Vinci to Degas. They’ll share the stories and, if you’re lucky, the scandals behind these paintings. Experience Gilbert’s portrait of George Washington, Monet’s “Woman with a Parasol,” and Raphael’s “The Alba Madonna” among other timeless works. We’ll discuss the techniques used to create these important works, like Titan’s “Venus with a Mirror” as well as the museum itself, which transformed from a near-empty building to a world-class museum in less than 100 years.

Highlights of the tour generally include:

• George Washington's Sword
• The Star Spangled Banner
• First Ladies’ Gowns
• Dorothy’s Ruby Red Slippers
• Ginevra de’ Benci by Leonardo da Vinci
• George Washington by Gilbert Stuart
• Self Portrait by Vincent Van Gogh
