Get picked up in the very early morning hours before sunrise from your Yogyakarta hotel. You’ll transfer from there to the town of Candi Rejo, a town situated near Borobudur, to begin your trek to this famous Buddhist monument on foot.
Experience the first tendrils of early morning light as they unfold along the horizon, trekking through an ancient landscape of rice fields and small local villages. You’ll also be able to spot several of Java’s towering volcanoes off in the distance, including Mount Merapi, Mount Sindoro, Mount Berbabu, and Mount Sumbing.
Arrive at the Borobudur temple complex in the early morning, an hour at when crowds are minimal and you’ll have the area mostly to yourself. Learn about the history of this sprawling Buddhist religious site, including the restoration effort to remove large deposits of mud and dust. There will also be time to explore the intricate carvings and bell-shaped structures of this UNESCO World Heritage site.
Cap off your Borobudur visit with a local breakfast before continuing with more trekking to viewpoints with views of the surrounding volcanoes. You’ll also have time to take a ride aboard a “dokar,” a horse-drawn transport that will allow you to explore Javanese cultural traditions like farming, traditional houses, and performing art in the villages surrounding the site. At the end of your visit, receive a transfer back to your Yogyakarta hotel, arriving around 11am.
