Sabandía Mill (Molino de Sabandía) Tours

Sabandía Mill (Molino de Sabandía)
A fine example of Arequipa’s sillar stone architecture, Sabandía Mill (Molino de Sabandía) was built in 1785 as the first mill of its kind. The mill still operates today, attracting visitors with its historic status. Peppered with weeping willows and cacti, the tranquil grounds surrounding the mill are a favorite among picnickers.

The Basics
With its buttresses, vaults, gargoyles, gates, and balconies—all made from distinctive white stone—Sabandía Mill is an interesting and relaxing place to escape the city center crowds. And visitors enjoy some of the best views of the Misti volcano from the grounds of the mill.

Go on your own, or explore Sabandía Mill as part of a guided tour of the Arequipa countryside. Tours typically combine a stop at the mill with a visit to Founder’s Mansion (La Mansión del Fundador) and other cultural gems, and often include convenient round-trip transport.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • Sabandía Mill is a must-see for history buffs and nature lovers.
  • There’s a small admission fee to enter the grounds.

How to Get There
Sabandía Mill is about a 45-minute walk or a 10-minute drive from the historical center of Arequipa. Many travelers visit the mill as part of a tour.

When to Get There
Sabandía Mill is open between 9am and 6pm daily, including public holidays. On weekends, the mill serves as a popular picnic spot for locals—for fewer crowds, visit on a weekday.

The Delights of the Sabandía Mill Grounds
The grounds of Sabandía Mill are a bucolic place to spend an afternoon with the family. Full of ancient trees and winding paths, the gardens are home to alpacas, llamas, guinea pigs, roosters, and even peacocks.
