National Museum of Romanian History (Muzeul National de Istorie a Romaniei) Tours

National Museum of Romanian History (Muzeul National de Istorie a Romaniei)
Housed in a grandiose neoclassical building along Calea Victoriei, the National Museum of Romanian History takes visitors on a journey through national history and heritage with its permanent collection of over 750,000 items. Note that the museum is partially closed for renovations until 2021, and exhibits may move to a temporary location in the interim.

The Basics
Leave yourself plenty of time to explore the National Museum of Romanian History, which has over 60 exhibition rooms, or opt for a guided visit to gain further insight into the vast collection. A visit to the museum is a popular inclusion on tours of Bucharest, while many sightseeing tours and walking tours make a stop along Calea Victoriei to admire the museum’s regal colonnaded facade.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • There is an admission fee for the museum, but children under 8 go free, and there are discounts for students.
  • Exhibition information is available in multiple languages, including English.
  • On-site facilities include restrooms and a museum shop.
  • Most areas of the museum are wheelchair-accessible.

How to Get There
The National Museum of Romanian History is located on Calea Victoriei in downtown Bucharest, opposite the beaux arts CEC Palace. The closest metro stop is Piața Unirii (line M2), from which it’s about a 5-minute walk to the museum.

When to Get There

The museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday, and the quietest time to visit is typically on a weekday morning. Note that the ticket desk closes an hour before closing.

Museum Highlights

The museum has two must-see collections—the priceless jewels in the National Treasury Hall, which include the Romanian crown jewels, and the Bronze Age relics in the Lapidarium—but there’s plenty more to see. Additional highlights include a full-size replica of Trajan’s Column in Rome and a much-derided 21st-century bronze sculpture of a very naked Emperor Trajan holding a wolf, which stands on the museum steps.
