Live like a local in Nagoya 2 days: Food & Cultural Tour in Endoji

Experience first-hand the Endoji Shotengai, Nagoya’s oldest shopping and entertainment arcade, and the surrounding Endoji and Shikemichi districts by living there like locals do. Originally designated as samurai housing, the area still features shrines and temples dating back to the city's founding over 400 years ago. Although undergoing revitalisation, the area retains a taste of the time just before Japan's post-war economic miracle. For the Japanese, this is a nostalgic period, and scenes like this are rapidly disappearing from cityscapes across the nation. Meet the people of the area, try the simple foods loved by townsfolk, hop local bars, stay overnight at a guesthouse in the arcade, learn how to cook local cuisine, and discover one of the last and rarely seen backstage scenes of Japan.

Washi paper making in the craftworker's place in Mino

This experience tour lets you make Japanese paper (washi) in an atelier that’s actually used by craftworkers. Create your own customized washi by taking advantage of the thin but sturdy quality of Minowashi paper, adding decorations in the spaces and see-through parts in the paper and so on. Washi works well as a book cover, among other things, Minowashi paper is a traditional craftwork product with a 1,300-year history. With an abundance of pure waters, the Makidani region of Mino city once touted an array of 1,000 washi manufacturers as the “homeland of washi”; but only around ten washi manufacturers remain who produce this paper for a living. You’ll get the chance to delve into this deep world of washi, in which it is said that the side of the river bank where one gets the water to make the paper, not to mention the mood of the craftworker both become evident in the paper that they make.

A beginner's guide of the world of Japanese swords Katana

Participants of this experience tour will get to see the sparks flying off of swords made by swordsmiths, as well as hold and use the large hammer themselves. You’ll be sure to be taken in by the power of the Japanese katana as you hold it in your hands, learn to wield it and discover the important points about what to look for. There’s also a “name-engraving experience,” where you can etch your name into a small blade. Even visitors who aren’t interested in swords are sure to see the katana in a different light after this experience. Katana swordsmiths made their beginning in Seki during the Kamakura era. In Seki, the high-quality water drawn from Nagara River, not to mention soil and charcoal can be easily obtained, which was the impetus for more than 300 swordsmiths to offer their services here during the Muromachi era. The traditional skills of these swordsmiths have been passed down to the present day, and Seki is now one of the few cities in the world where katanas are made.
