Outdoor Adventures in Dominica
The Caribbean island of Dominica bills itself as the Nature Island, and you can find out why while enjoying outdoor adventures such as hiking, snorkeling, and canyoning. Waterfalls, hot springs, gorges, and a UNESCO World Heritage–listed national park provide plenty of ways to explore the mountainous landscape. Here are a few options.
Hiking to Boiling Lake
If you’re up for a physical challenge, book a guided hike to Boiling Lake in Dominica’s Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the southeastern side of the island. The 2nd-largest hot lake in the world, Boiling Lake—one of Dominica’s many volcanic features—is known for its steaming blue-gray water. Tours take a full day; the trail is steep at times, climbing amid native vegetation, birds, and rivers.
Half-day canyoning tours to Titou Gorge, on the edge of Morne Trois Pitons National Park, are an exciting way to see the natural beauty of the island’s interior. Helmets and other equipment are typically provided for exploring the canyon walls, rappelling down waterfalls, and jumping into the water. For an even bigger thrill, book a night tour.
Water Sports
Dominica offers up nearly all of the typical Caribbean water activities, including stand-up paddleboarding, boat tours, dolphin-watching cruises, fishing, kayaking, tubing, and snorkeling. On this volcanic island, however, things are even more interesting at places like Champagne Reef, which gets its name from the continuous bubbles on the surface caused by geothermal activity under the water.
