Hiking up an active volcano sounds daunting, but with an experienced guide it can be exhilarating, as on this half-day tour. Explore the highest peak in the Lesser Antilles, La Soufrière, listening to guided commentary about its native flora and fauna on the way. With a small group of just eight other hikers, you'll be ensured personalized attention from your guide and plenty of time to ask questions.
At 1467 metres, La Soufrière volcano is the highest peak in the Eastern Antilles. Often called “la vieille dame” (the old lady) by locals, La Soufrière is 100,000 years old. It is located in the southern part of the Guadeloupe’s national park, 5km north of the small village of Saint-Claude. For a breathtaking, 360 degree view of paradise, put on your comfortable shoes and meet with your guide at the Yellow Baths (Les Bains Jaunes) parking lot no later than 7:00 am. The hike will take you to the top in about 2 to 3 hours. Along the way, on a clear day, you will enjoy remarkable views of the coast of Basse-Terre and the Caribbean Sea. It also boasts beautiful plant life full of superb colours, which varies as you ascend the hill and can be admired during the course of your walk. A guided hike to the summit of the volcano will empower and will leave you feeling invigorated. On the way back, you will enjoy a traditional lunch and get a chance to swim and relax in a warm pool.
