Tai Mo Shan Tours

1 review
At 957 meters tall, Tai Mo Shan is the highest peak in Hong Kong and is home to the famous 35-meter-waterfall, Main Falls (also known as Long Falls). Within easy reach of Hong Kong, Tai Mo Shan offers the perfect day out hiking in the fresh air away from the bustle of city life.

Tai Mo Shan is famous for its waterfall collection, Ng Tung Chai, and for offering panoramic views of the city and its surroundings. Considered a moderate hike, it can be enjoyed by anyone who has the ability to walk for several hours uphill. Along the way, you can discover native orchids and bamboos among the 1,500 species of plants living on this ancient, inactive volcano, with the flora and fauna changing as you reach nearer the top. (The very top of the mountain is occupied by a weather radar station and is therefore not accessible.)

While visiting Tai Mo Shan will require a whole day, the hiking part can be done in half a day, with some spare time to admire the beautiful waterfalls and snap a view photos. Unless an experienced hiker, a guided hike is the best option so that you can relax and enjoy the day while learning the history of the mountain and its inhabitants.

Practical Info

If not arriving at Tai Mo Shan as part of an organized tour, take the MTR to either Tsuen Wan, Kwai Hing, or Tai Wo Hau station and taking a taxi to Lead Mine Pass. Although anybody with a reasonable level of fitness should be able to do this hike, it is still an uphill trek and you should ensure you have adequate food and water for your journey, as well as the appropriate shoes and attire for a day of walking.

Did You Know? An extensive programme of reforestation took place after World War II, which saw the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong nearly eradicate all of the trees in this area. The majority of the new plantation are non-native trees.
