Armenian Quarter Tours

Armenian Quarter
Jerusalem’s Armenian Quarter dates back to the fourth century and remains the oldest Armenian diaspora on earth. Centered around the St. James Monastery, the quarter is ripe with religious, cultural and historical monuments that make it worthy of a visit.

Travelers can explore the Cathedral of St. James and  the halls of St. Toros Church—two of the oldest structures in the quarter, or wander the grounds of Alex and Marie Manoogian Seminary—a modern school for those studying holy traditions. The Helen and Edward Mardigian Museum of Armenian Art and Culture highlights the artistic contributions of Armenians and the St. Toros Manuscript Library is home to the second-largest collection of Armenian manuscripts in the world.

Practical Info

The Armenian Quarter is located in the southwestern part of the Old City. Travelers can enter through Zion or Jaffa Gates.

Pickup at 0700 was a bit strange as we were dumped at a park 0730 and told to wait with no instructions. Once all the tour buses arrived 0815ish we were told how it all worked, were directed to the correct bus and continued to Jerusalem. We detoured twice to pick up additional guests and started the tour at 10am from the Jaffa gate. the tour guide was very knowledgeable and we sped through the city. It would have been nice to spend a bit more time at a few places, but it was also very hot and spending time at the Western Wall any more than we did would have been rough. The Holocaust museum was very moving and though we were thoroughly spent from walking Jerusalem was a nice end to the day.

I booked this tour at the very last moment, late evening before tour date. I was picked up by a taxi from the hotel and all was fabulously arranged. Our tour guide Dan definitely made it worth every penny of the tour price! He is super knowledgeable and nice and can present the historical facts in a truly fascinating way. The only downside was the slightly long time spent at the souvenir shop, but everything else about the tour exceeded my expectations. I’m very grateful for the tour provider for making it such a special and memorable experience!

I've been to Jerusalem 4 times and this was the first time I really saw it from multiple perspectives. A truly informative and impressive tour. There is so much to see in the Old City but this tour provides a historical and personal perspective that usually is not seen in the "typical" tours. I have already told others to book this tour.

My tour guide was very acknowledge but she shouldn't go with the time because she rushed us badly. I think Viator should extend the time for this tour, they time they give is not enough for pics. Beside that the tour was average good. Food was good as well, they picked a good restaurant.

Dispite really bad weather, cold, rain, wind, - we really enjoyed the tour and it is thanks to our guide person. He was extremely knowledgeable, thoughtful and helpful. It was the second year in a row we traveled to Jerusalem and took similar tour- and both times it was an amazing experience

Busy but interesting

The first day was a walking tor which seemed to surprise a number of participants. We visited many of the important Christian sites (not the Church of the Holy Sepulchre which is covered on day 2 if you book the two day tour) The morning part was very good but after lunch (pricey and not that good) we were taken to a souvenir shop which was very expensive and then the guide seemed to spend about 45 minutes trying to sort something out and then told us that was the end of the tour and we were to be returned to Tel Aviv by taxi. This had happened on a previous tour so we were not bothered but we were put into a taxi with several people two other people were going to Tel Aviv and set off on one of the most hair-raising rides of my life. He overtook every vehicle and was swerving from lane to lane. There were three incidents where he had to brake hard and one where he only avoided a crash by swerving into the right hand lane - fortunately there were no other vehicles in it. He finally stopped near our hotel (not at the hotel) and we were relieved to get out. He travelled from Jerusalem to central Tel Aviv in 31 minutes and the first 10 minutes had been dropping off other passengers and traffic.
