Atlas Mountains

Marrakech, Morocco

The Basics

The vast mountain range is split into three main regions: the centrally located High Atlas, the Middle Atlas to the north, and the remote Anti Atlas, tucked away in the south. Easily reached from Marrakech, the High Atlas range draws many visitors, with hotels clustered around popular spots like the picturesque Ourika Valley, Ouirgane, and Imlil. It’s also home to the 13,671-foot (4,167-meter) Mount Toubkal, Morocco’s highest peak. For many, a stay in the High Atlas Mountains is a pit stop en route to Ouarzazate, the launch pad for camping tours and desert camel treks. Experience the grandeur of the Atlas Mountains on a day trip from Marrakech, which might include activities such as quad biking, hot air ballooning, or a visit to a Berber village.

Desert Agafay & Atlas Mountains & Waterfalls, Camel ride Day Trip From Marrakech
Atlas Mountains hike with a kind and welcoming guide Jamal who even carried our water for us, was the highlight of our return visit to Marrakesh. Hamid collected and dropped off at the hotel and took us to the camel ride where we had the best mint tea of both trips here and were dresses in traditional dress and headscarf for our ride on the camels who were clean and well-treated. It was a gem to find this trip at such a fantastic price.

Atlas Mountains & 5 Valleys Day Tour from Marrakech - All inclusive -
We had an amazing day with our tour guide Marwan. The first guide who was extremely knowledgeable of the Amazigh culture; great fun; and who could sing! We were picked up on time given coffee and delicious breads and taken to one of the best mountain restaurants 1900m high that I have ever been too. I can highly recommend this tour if you want to visit the Atlas Mountains. Thank you Marwan!!

Atlas Mountain Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride From Marrakech
Loved this experience. From hotel pick up, to balloon lift off then the soft set down it was perfect. We had an amazing female pilot and really enjoyed the traditional breakfast. The time in the balloon was incredible. Soft floating watching the sun rise and the moon set all at the same time. Watchin g the other balloons with the backdrop of the Atlas mountains and Marrakesh was fantastic.

Day Excursion To Ourika Valley and High Atlas From Marrakech: Shared
Such a beautiful place! The Berber communities we visited were very nice and kind. The hiking was amazing, and the guide helped everyone climb up the mountains. Take your time and enjoy! Lunch on the river bank was so nice, with the snow-capped Atlas mountains facing us! Our guide and driver were both funny and helpful. A wonderful trip!

Desert Agafay & Atlas Mountains & Waterfalls, Camel ride Day Trip From Marrakech
This was a great trip. Easy pick-up. Great driver and guide. We rode camels, stopped at two viewing points to see the Atlas mountains, stopped for a Berber lunch, hiked to the waterfall, and visited an Argon oil farm. Overall, great experience!

Very enjoyable trip to the Atlas Mountains. Incredible views and lovely people. Our guide Mohammed was great. He comes from the area so knew everyone. Highly recommended. Only regret is we didn’t have longer.

Atlas Mountains - The Ancient Ait Ben Haddou and Telouet Day Tour from Marrakech
This was an incredible experience to visit a number of historic locations in the Atlas Mountains and some beautiful lookout points. Abdoul, our tour guide, was simply awesome, great conversation on the trip and interesting and informative talks at the locations we visited. He went out of his way to take lots of family photos for us too. Thank you for the memorable experience.

Marrakech: Atlas Mountains, Three Valleys, Berber villages Day Trip & Camel ride
Airman did an excellent job and we had a very exciting day in a wonderful area surrounded of the highest peaks of the Atlas mountains. The highlight was the very tastefully lunch at the roof top of Airman‘s house with a superb view. Very friendly family. We experienced unforgettable hours. Many thanks to Airman and his family. Gladly again.

Half Day Tour From Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains & Ourika Valley
What a great day. Marwan our driver and Jamal our guide were both fantastic. Both are Berber and communicated a great deal about the background of the indigenous Berber people. The journey into the Atlas Mountains was good. The walk up to the end point was also very enjoyable. Not too strenuous with many local tradesmen lining the route with quality locally made items. No-one pestered though. Hiking boots not needed but flimsy footwear is a no no. Recommended.

Atlas Mountains Hot Air Balloon Ride from Marrakech with Berber Breakfast and Desert Camel Experience
One of the most unique things about our time in Marrakech. We had to reschedule for the next day due to weather conditions (too windy) but I’m grateful that the pilots were looking out for our safety. The day we did the tour was beautiful, we got amazing pictures and the pilots are so fun. Antoine landed the hot air balloon on the trailer attached to the truck; skillz!!

Private Desert Agafay and Atlas Mountains luxury Day Trip
It was the most fantastic trip I have ever experienced. The mini-bus was clean and comfortable. I liked every moment of our trip: the waterfalls, the mountains, the lunch, and the camel ride. The staff was attentive to everyone and did their job very well, especially our guide Mustapha in Atlas. The lunch was one of the best we had in Marrakech. I would recommend this trip with this company to everyone.

When to Get There

For most travelers, the best time for a trip into the Atlas Mountains is March through November. While summers can be hot, temperatures in the Atlas Mountains are cooler than in the Moroccan lowlands. Mountain snow is usual from mid-January to mid-February, making this an excellent time for skiing in North Africa. Note that some businesses will be closed during Ramadan.

Highlights of the Atlas Mountains

The Atlas Mountains are dotted with interesting places to explore. Azzaden Valley is a quieter alternative to neighboring Imlil Valley and a popular base for guided treks. Dades Gorge, famous for growing Damascus roses, is a favorite destination for climbers, hikers, and white-water rafters. The rivers of the Middle Atlas feed the beautiful Ouzoud Falls, while Ifrane, the gateway town of the region, looks right out of the French Alps.
