What to Expect. Archaeology and Geology.
At the smoking shadow of Fuego volcano lies Cotzumalguapa Archaeological Zone, the area’s dominant center during the prehispanic Maya periods. No visible ancient structures as they are buried beneath layers of volcanic eruptions. Its art captured part of its political system and its religious thought. And a significant part of this art is housed in the venues visited on this tour.
Fuego volcano drains its material via barrancas or drainages. You will see some of the materials transported from higher parts of the volcano and its effect on communities at lower elevations. Its fertile soil has attracted people who have adapted to living with the rumblings, ashfall, and occasional pyroclastic flows.
Cotzumalguapa’s inhabitants developed an original artistic style seen in monumental sculptures and small objects. Archaeological excavations have enlightened about its cultural importance. No hiking involved.
