The Basics

As the second most popular attraction in Italy after only the Vatican, the Colosseum hosts some 4 million annual visitors, meaning that long lines are nearly inevitable without a skip-the-line tour. Choose from a number of tours suited to any age or interest, such as a Colosseum underground tour that heads beneath the arena floor to explore a network of passages; a small-group guided tour of the third tier; or a night tour that offers an eery experience and relief from the daytime heat. Consider group tours, self-guided audio tours, or private tours to gain an understanding of this well-preserved ancient Roman amphitheater and its historical importance.

Excellent tour
We enjoyed the tour, the guide was excellent, and made sure that those of us with mobility issues were able to keep up and see everything.

Skip the Line: Colosseum Small Group Tour with Roman Forum & Palatine Hill
The tour of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill was excellent. Our guide, Tatiana, was so knowledgeable, friendly, helpful and informative. We didn't miss anything and she navigated our group perfectly through the sites. I would definitely recommend a semi-private tour for Rome's biggest attractions. The intimate experience helped us enjoy this tour.
Magnificent Experience.

Guides can make or break the trip. Ask for Georgia at the Vatican…

Vatican and Colosseum Combo Tour: Don’t Wait in Line to See the Best of Rome
Georgia was the most fantastic guide, knowledgeable and so enthusiastic. The Vatican part of the trip was incredible, all thanks to her. A credit to Georgia, who was a credit to City Wonders. The colosseum guide was not so good, spending most of the trip talking about the rocks and trees. The fact I can’t remember her name says it all. 5 stars for Georgia….

Vatican and Colosseum Combo Tour: Don’t Wait in Line to See the Best of Rome
Giuseppe was our guide for the Vatican tour; he was extremely knowledgeable and such a pleasure. Mickey was our guide for the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, and the Forum and shared a wealth of history and information. We would highly recommend this tour, it’s a lot of walking but worth it!

Small-Group Tour of Colosseum Underground, Arena and Forum
This is the ultimate tour for You who are really interested in Rome and Roman Empire. During the tour our knowledgeable guide Sara told us a lot of the Colosseum, the Palitine and Forum Romanum and about the life of the romans citizens. There are a lot of walking but there are also several stops among the historical environment. I strongly recommend this tour if You are interested in history in general and particularly the Roman Empire with its gladiators and emperors!

Colosseum and Ancient Rome Small-Group Walking Tour
This isn’t for posting but I do think you should consider offering segmented groups. We had a much older man in our group. Lovely man and he tried hard to keep up but really he needed to be with a group of people not woRried about moving so fast. He ended up falling. In the colosseum, we saw many groups with infants in strollers and crying. That would have definitely ruined our time. We had a terrific guide and fellow sightseers but think you have an opportunity to make changes.
Great tour

Skip the Line: Colosseum Small Group Tour with Roman Forum & Palatine Hill
This was an excellent tour. Our tour guide Eddy was very informative and knew so much history about the Colosseum and Palatine Hill. This was one of the best tours we took. I wish all of the tours we took had someone as enthusiastic and knowledgeable as Eddy.

Colosseum Express Tour
Unfortunately I cannot remember our guides name but he was excellent. His knowledge on the history of paletine hill, the colosseum, the best views and his eagerness to teach us made the tour. Getting this experience was well worth the money as you learnt so much more from the guide. Would highly recommend

Colosseum and Roman Forum Private Tour
Rossana was early and waiting for us outside our hotel to take us to our tour of the Colosseum and Roman Forum. We were greeted by our tour guide, Giuseppe. He was knowledgeable, insightful and friendly while explaining historical and architectural information to us regarding the sites. It felt like we were having a casual stroll on a beautiful day with an old friend. Rossana and her team at Rome Italy Explora exceeded our expectations.

Our guide Siri was exceptional. Very informative and spoke clearly. Nice mix of history given. It was a very busy day around the colosseum but she knew where to take us for best views and talks. Steve Canada

When to Get There

Since the Colosseum is most crowded during the middle of the day, begin or end your Rome tour with a visit first thing in the morning or just before last entry (which is an hour before closing time) in the late afternoon. Alternatively, choose a night tour for a unique, less crowded experience. Summer is the most popular time of year to visit, while the site receives fewer crowds in November through February, aside from the Christmas and New Year holidays.
