Safaga Cruise Port Tours

Safaga Cruise Port
Safaga Cruise Port sits in the small town of Safaga, on the shores of the Red Sea, and is best knowns as the most convenient ocean cruise terminal for reaching the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Luxor. From the port, you can also easily reach the resort town of Hurghada, about an hour’s drive to the north.

The Basics
Safaga is a working port town but the surrounding area offers windsurfing, snorkeling, diving, and beaches. Stay nearby, or head to Hurghada (40 miles or 65 km away) for a day of watersports. Alternatively, visit Luxor (150 miles or 241 km away) to see Luxor Temple, Karnak Temple, the Temple of Hatshepsut, and the Colossi of Memnon. Luxor is also home to the Valley of the Kings, which boasts dozens of tombs, including the famous final resting place of King Tutankhamun.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Visitors planning to head to Luxor would be better served taking a Nile cruise that stops at the Luxor cruise port, rather than this port on the Red Sea, which is much farther away.
  • Allow at least nine hours for a Luxor excursion. The city is a 3-hour drive from the port.
  • Private shore excursions are good value in Egypt and can make for a more personal experience than group tours.

How to Get to Luxor from the Safaga Cruise Port
The Safaga port sits about 6 miles (10 kilometers) south of the town of Safaga, on Egypt’s Red Sea. Most visitors reach the port while on a Red Sea cruise. The port is about 150 miles (241 kilometers) northeast of Luxor, or around a 3-hour drive through the desert in a private car. Public transportation is hot, slow, uncomfortable, and unreliable, so Safaga shore excursions include pickup and drop-off from the port.

Port Information
Egyptians in Safaga (and elsewhere) speak Egyptian Arabic. Local signs are written in both English and Arabic, as are street names. The local currency is the Egyptian pound, and if you require ATMs or money changers, you might have to go all the way to Safaga town, some miles from the port. If you arrive in Egypt via cruise ship for a planned excursion, your ship will take care of the visa formalities.
