Urban Hiking in San Francisco
One of San Francisco’s greatest perks is its proximity to nature and open spaces. There are a variety of hikes both in the city and just outside that will satisfy your craving for the outdoors. Here's what you need to know for a scenic adventure.

City Hiking
San Francisco’s hills make its urban hikes more challenging than you’d think. But the views of city and the Pacific Ocean on offer as you climb through picturesque neighborhoods or out on the Presidio's dirt trails are worth seeking out. Guided tours grant the unique opportunity to stop in spots that are fairly unknown and perhaps only accessible by foot. You may even have moments where you wonder if you've left the city limits. Lands End lookout and Sutro Baths are enduring favorites, while coastal trails run around Ocean Beach, Baker Beach, and Crissy Field.

Marin Hiking
Just over the Golden Gate Bridge is a whole other world of towering trees and sweeping views of the bay. In addition to the Marin Headlands, which offers some of the best hiking in the area (as well as some of the best views of the bridge), you won’t want to miss Mt. Tamalpais, which offers 360-degree views of the entire area.
