Art Museum of the Americas Tours

Set in a graceful Spanish Colonial home designed by Paul Cret (architect of the Folger Shakespeare Library), this intimate museum is dedicated to art from Latin America and the Caribbean. Created in accordance with the now defunct Visual Arts Unit of the Organization of American States, the AMA’s permanent collection was kickstarted in 1949, but the museum itself wasn’t opened until 1976. That original collection was then 250 works, but today has grown to over 2,000 objects in varying media including painting, sculpture, drawings and photographs.

With a strong focus on the 20th century, the museum has increasingly been highlighting the work of contemporary and emerging artists, as well; only one rotating exhibit is presented at a time. The AMA’s exhibition space continues outside in the formal sculpture garden, where benches are available for lingering.
Guided tours of the museum are available by appointment only, Tuesday-Friday, 10 am - 4 pm ; email or call (202) 458-3362.
