Journey to the site of the original marathon race, where legend tells of the Greek messenger Pheidippides who ran all the way to Athens to share the news of the Athenian victory over the Persian army at the Battle of Marathon. Meet your local garden in Marathon midmorning, and set off on a tour of the town’s most famous landmarks.
Stand at the starting point in the modern Athens Classic Marathon, and browse race artifacts and history at the Marathon Museum. See the final resting place of Greek soldiers who perished in the 490 BC Battle of Marathon at the the Tomb of the Athenians burial mound.
After getting your fix of racing history, sample some of the produce that comes from the rich Marathon soil at a local market, where you’ll have the opportunity to chat with farmers. Finally, relax with a cup of coffee, fresh sour cherry juice and a traditional snack of ‘mezes’ while getting to know your guide’s friendly family.
Please note: The Marathon Museum is closed on Mondays.
