Teaching yourself Cretan cooking would usually mean working from a recipe book. This village culinary experience from Rethymno and Heraklion lets you learn hands-on from a local cook, so you pick up authentic techniques from a master. As you prep and savor dishes such as ‘stifado’ stew, you’ll also experience a Cretan village house and rural life, and hear stories from the cook—all difficult to arrange independently.
Discover Cretan village cooking on a tour from Rethymno and Heraklion
Learn and prep dishes direct from a home cook: hard to organize on your own
Savor your creations and hear gems on local life and food you’d miss alone
Includes lunch and return travel, with transfers from other locations for extra cost
We had a wonderful day at our private cooking class in the mountains near Vatos. Our driver, Haris, acted as tour guide as we drove from outside of Heraklion up into the mountains. It was a long trip, but we got to see more of Crete on the way.
When we arrived at Eva's, we had refreshments and got to know each other. We then started cooking in her wonderful open-air kitchen/dining room overlooking the valley. We made tzatziki, Cretan pies, stuffed tomatoes and peppers, etc. As Eva finished up the cooking, Haris gave us a tour of the village. We then enjoyed the fruits of our labours, and it was wonderful!
On the way back to our hotel, Haris stopped to show us some sights.
We felt that we had an authentic Greek experience, and we're still enjoying some of our parting gifts from Eva.
