Despite the fact that the pick up is disorganized, and you will definitely get a late start and stop several times for unknown reasons, Chefchaouen is extremely beautiful and a much-needed break from the hustle of Fez. I was tired of guided tours, so I opted out of that and wandered on my own- which I would recommend. The driver was late picking up at the designated spot, and wouldn't take us to our actual riads if they were near the medina,so be aware that you will be on your own in Fez after dark. All this hassle aside, Chefchaouen+surrounding countryside was one of my favorite parts of Morocco!
long bumpy bus ride, with 20 passengers..... but skilled driver. Wandering around the main square and up into the city was beautiful. All the different blues...then the view and Moroccan mint tea on the terrace at the top. Well worth the day trip!!!!
We booked the tour through Viator which was quiet easy. I sent a Whats App to the company as I wanted to confirm pick up time at 12:26pm and they did not reply till after I called at 7pm. Pick up was over half hour late. Our driver was basically a taxi driver. He barely spoke over the drive. He mention the Kings palace which was 40 acres. Pointed out a lake and offered to take our picture. Then would only tell us how long to our destination. We stopped just outside chefcheoun for photo and he left one lady behind. When we got into the village we were dropped off with our guide and he said he would see us at 430 at the same spot. None of us knew we had a guide nor what the tour/plan was. The small local guide (Ahmed) let us to some good photo spots then to the Aladdin restaurant. He was very pushy when I said I did not want to eat there as I was meeting a friend else where. He told me that I was rude for not taking his lunch suggestion, that I wouldn’t find a better restaurant and if someone recommends something you should learn to listen. Not impressed. We left and wandered around on our own. We met our driver at 430 who drove us back to Fes. We did not feel safe with the driver and have travelled all over Africa and the Middle East. He was very aggressive. Slightly disappointed.
Not worth it. Driver did not speak English; tour guide cut our tour short (3pm) because he was upset that we wanted more free time to see the Medina to take pictures. I suggest you take a bus and take your time in a Chefchaoun. It is a beautiful place.
The trip is about 4 hrs drive, even though this sounds long it is totally worth it!! Our driver was nice and stopped a couple times for us to use the bathroom and take landscape pictures. Once in Chefchaouen we meet our tour guide which was kind and knowledgeable, and funny too. He took us inside the Médina and explained us everything. Then he even recommended us where to eat depending of what we wanted. Overall was an excellent choice. If you have the chance to do so I will highly recommended.
This is another good place to visit on a day trip from Fez. Our pick up was on time and there were about eight other people on this trip with us. Our driver Ibrahim was friendly and did give some info on towns we passed by and arranged for a local tour guide to take us around town. Get ready for some walking and going up and down stairs in this town. I would recommend a tour guide because of the narrow lanes and alleys that you have to navigate. The guide charged us 20 Moroccon Dhirams per person, which is reasonable for a 3 hour tour. We did have to stop by one of the guide's recommended carpet store. But you can politely let the owner know you are not going to buy anything on this trip. It was cold day during our visit and rained later in the day. So its better to check the weather and prepare before you head out. We departed around 4 PM and were dropped off by our Raid around 8:30 PM. Overall, it was a good day trip and this Blue town reminded us about Santorini in Greece.
This option is for those looking for Value For Money. If you simply need an easy way to get to/from Chefchaouen from Fez -- knowing that you'll be in a small group and NOT private -- this is a great option. We were picked up at our riad around 8am, then waited for 5 others to join us in our van. It took around 3 hours to get to Chef and we were there a little before lunch. We were given about 4 hours, which is more than enough for those of you who really just want to see the place, explore a bit, enjoy a meal, and then leave. An ideal day trip with a kind and knowledgeable driver who is NOT a guide, but will happily talk to you and answer questions during the ride to/from the town. The company is also very flexible, so if you have any issues, be sure to contact them directly with your concerns and they will help you they were a great assistance to us when we had a small scheduling change request.
General itinerary as follows: 8am pickup, 11am arrival preceded by a quick stop outside the town to get a full panorama picture, a few hours to wander the town, depart roughly 2:30-3pm, return back to Fez by 6pm or so depending on weather/traffic with another stop along the way for bathroom/coffee break.
