When booking, choose one of five tour start times that best suits your schedule. Head to the aerial gondola station at the base of Mt Roberts and board a coach for your 45-minute narrated tour through downtown Juneau and neighboring Douglas Island. Learn about the historical sites you pass, including St Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, built in 1893, and the capitol building, dating back to 1929.
Cross Gastineau Channel onto Douglas Island, home to a ski resort and the small town of Douglas. Snap pictures of the Juneau harbor and surrounding mountains as you circle the island.
Next, enjoy 45 minutes of free time at Mendenhall Glacier, part of Tongass National Forest. Stretching from Juneau Ice Field to Mendenhall Lake, the glacier is 12 miles (20 km) long. Inside the Visitor Center, learn about the glacier’s formation, or explore trails like the Photo Point Trail and Nugget Creek Falls for gorgeous views of the glacier.
Hop back on the coach for a drive back to Juneau’s aerial gondola station, and enjoy the gondola ride up to Timberline Bar & Grill on Mt Roberts. Dig into a delicious meal of perfectly grilled coho salmon, served with seasonal vegetables. The views of the mountains and Gastineau Channel from 1,800 feet (550 meters) high are not too shabby either.
Your tour concludes with your meal. Take the gondola back down on your own when you’re ready, or spend more time on the mountain to visit the gift shop or hike one of the nearby trails.
