Make your own way to meet your guide in central Kochi, then get outfitted with your bicycle and helmet. After a short safety briefing, follow your guide on your 2-wheeled tour of the port town of Fort Kochi.
Learn about local history as you cruise past Santa Cruz Basilica and St Francis
Church, the burial site for the 16th-century Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama. Stop to watch local
fishermen at work and learn how they use traditional nets to catch fish, then witness the heart of Kochi’s fishing industry at fish auctions and prawn-peeling factories along the seashore. Follow your guide down coconut tree–lined streets and stop at beaches that are popular with locals. If time allows,
pop into a toddy bar for a drink (own expense).
Next, head into the Kerala backwaters to reach Ezhupunna village, where a local family welcomes you in for a traditional fisherman’s lunch that typically includes fresh
fried fish and curry dishes.
Afterward, set your bike aside to hop in a canoe or shikara
(covered wooden rowboat) for a 2-hour cruise through narrow canals that snake through waterways lined by lush vegetation.
Afterward, hop back on your bike and begin the return journey to
Kochi. En route, pull over for better views of prawn farms and the
Kumbalangi fishing hamlet, the first model eco-tourism village in India. Stop for great photo ops of the fishermen casting their nets on the shimmering sea.
Expect a ride that is suitable for cyclists of all levels, covering about 21 miles (34km) on easy
terrain. You'll go at a leisurely pace with plenty of stops for photo ops, water breaks and visits to local villages and beaches.
Your full-day tour ends in Fort Kochi when your guide returns you to your starting point.
