What To Expect

The tour will start with Dabbawala followed by Dhobi Ghat. You will be picked up at 10.00 am from your booked hotel in Mumbai. The driver will take you to the Churchgate Railway Station. Our English speaking tour guide will join you at the railway  station. You will come across the sight of Dabbawala’s disembarking from the train with lots of tiffins on the wooden cart.

At 10:30 am in the morning, you will be taken to the side of ticket counters of the railway station, where you can have a look at the local system of getting tickets. Then you will be provided train ticket to Mahalaxmi Station in the first class compartment from South to North Mumbai. Enjoy the journey comfortably at the least crowded train time period of the day.

At 11:00 am, you will reach Mahalaxmi Railway Station, one of the prime stations of Dabbawalas to get down for delivery. It is one of the main areas occupied by corporate offices where tiffins are supplied in large quantities.  Here, the tiffins are unloaded and divided on the basis of area to be delivered.

At 12:00 am, we will continue the tour moving to Mumbai’s Dhobi Ghat (Laundromat), world’s largest open air Laundromat. Here, the sight of as many as 7,000 washermen cleaning altogether in traditional Indian method will make your jaws drop.

At 12:45 pm, after the tour you will be dropped back at the hotel. The interesting Dabbawala and Dhobi Ghat Tour will hereby terminate.

Note: Dabbawala Tours are not operated on Sundays and major religious/ national holidays.

Overpriced

We were escorted to visit the street where the Dabbawalas congregate and a short trip on the train to where the Dhobi Ghat was. The guide and driver were very helpful but we could have gone there on our own and therefore felt that this tour was way overpriced.

Worst Tour Ever

Our anticipated 4 hour tour lasted 45 minutes. There was a conflict with our morning tour also booked through Viator that Viator ensured us would be worked out on their end. It did not happen. Since we took the other tour first our tour guide for the Dabbawalas and Dobi Ghat could only give us 45 minutes in total to cover a 4 hour tour. We took a short train ride in an unairconditioned train car to the laundry and then the guide put us in a car and sent us back to our hotel.because she had another tour booked. It was a waste of our time and the worst tour in our 19 day trip to India. When I contacted Viator upon returning home they would not accept any responsibility for the conflict. They said that we were to work out the times although they happily took our money and said they would adjust the scheduling of the tours since they were private tours. Disaster!.
