Overview

Seize the opportunity to see one of the world’s greatest natural spectacles on this evening Reykjavik Northern Lights tour. Hop into an climate-controlled coach with an expert guide, and venture deep into Iceland’s darkness-cloaked countryside, far from the electric glow of any towns. Stop at different locations to scan the ink-black skies for the legendary lights, and with luck, catch a dazzling display that you’ll remember forever. Taking a Northern Lights Iceland tour is a must for anyone visiting Reykjavik in winter, so don’t miss out!
  • Evening tour to see the amazing Northern Lights
  • One of the world's most amazing natural phenomena, also known as the Aurora Borealis
  • English-speaking tour guide
  • Pickup and drop-off from select Reykjavik meeting points

Why Travellers Choose This Tour

If you don’t see the aurora on this tour, you can do it again at no additional cost.
Leave the city by comfortable coach, and journey into Iceland’s countryside to search for the Northern Lights.

On route, listen as your guide explains the science behind the extraordinary natural phenomenon, also known as the Aurora Borealis. Learn about the Icelandic myths that have grown up around the spectacle, and how the fluorescent lights are formed by electrically charged particles in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Leave Reykjavik far behind, and head into an area free from any urban light pollution — the darker the skies, the better the chances of getting a good view of the lights.

Hop out of the coach at select locations with your camera in hand and scan the skies, with pointers from your guide. If you’re lucky, be treated to a display and gaze at the shimmering veils of fluorescent lights as they dance and move across the sky.

If you’re keen to get shots, get tips from your guide on how to set up your camera and take good quality photos. Sightings can’t be guaranteed, but if you don’t observe the lights, you will receive a complimentary ticket to take the evening tour on another day.

After your evening spent looking for the lights, return to Reykjavik where your tour finishes with a hotel drop-off.

poor organisation! our first tour was cancelled without us being informed therefore we were left waiting outside in the cold until we got hold of the tour company by phone to be informed of the cancellation! booked for the next again night and this time we were dropped off in an unrecognizable area of the city at 2 a.m. and took us 25 minutes to walk back to our accommodation thanks to our phone google map!

I didn't see the lights but got a free try again ticket. Very good service, good guide too. The lights are the only reason I came to Iceland so it was disappointing not to see them but what can you do.

We spent 90 minutes on the bus to stand in a field looking at the sky only to see nothing !! and 90 minutes back to the hotel ... waste of time and I think the tour operator knew as much before setting out

Great trip although we didn't see the Northern Lights!!

We didn't get to see the Lights but it was still a good trip although very long. We were 30 mins late leaving as all the buses were full and we had to wait for another, but Dennis the tour rep soon made up for this. He was friendly and funny and very informative. We went out to a little church which was beautiful and the sky was so clear we could see all the stars, but unfortunately no Northern Lights. The down side was that we had to drop everyone off at their various hotels on the way back which took nearly an hour, so we had been on the trip for almost 5 hours. We were given the option to try again for free another night but we're not going to bother because it is just too long. Thank you Dennis for keeping us entertained.

Northern Lights!

There evidently was the need to consolidate bus passengers, so a trip to the Greyline depot put us a little behind. The guide was very informative, and spotted the lights immediately upon leaving the city and getting into a dark area. We made some great pictures, we stayed for 30-40 minutes. Our mission for the trip was accomplished!

We waited a long time until finally the lights appeared but the driver changed to a new location- right at that time. New location has some lights but less dramatic.

Saw the amazing Northern Lights so that makes for a very good tour. The tour guide seemed preoccupied and the wifi on the bus was a waste of effort.

Waste of time

Saw the northern lights from our hotel, then excursion time, lot of waiting around for pick up etc then when it came to it we were just outside the city, you could still see all the lights so not exactly away from it all, to top it up the guide I felt was poor and the driver who took us back to the hotel felt that it was OK to drive like a mad man whilst using his mobile phone not impressed by grey line on this occasion

Our guide Darrin and driver were excellent. While the aurora was barely visible, they made it an enjoyable adventure. Darrin also gave tips of how to set the camera to get the best pictures.

Good and Bad

The tour results are unpredictable due to the weather. But the tour provider Grayline provided more than one opportunities, which we appreciated. Viator, as the booking agent, failed to inform us when the provider canceled the tour one night and caused us to have waited in the freezing cold for a long time.
