Why Travellers Choose This Tour
Get the standard Colosseum experience with skip-the-line entry to the first two levels as well as the Forum.
Your Ancient Rome tour starts near Oppian Hill, one of the Seven Hills of Rome, for a view of the Colosseum. Then walk down to the arena with your guide, and skip the main entrance line with your fast-track ticket. Inside, explore the Colosseum’s first and second tiers while listening to stories from your guide about the brutal events that were once held here, like executions and gory gladiator battles. As you stroll around the perimeter of the amphitheater, try to image the ancient crowd of up to 50,000 spectators who cheered as gladiators’ fates were decided by power-hungry emperors.
Next, exit the Colosseum and walk over to the Roman Forum, once the political heart of the city. Get an up-close view of ancient remains like the House of the Vestal Virgins and the Temple of Julius Caesar, and then walk up Palatine Hill for another perspective of the ruins, including Circus Maximus, where chariot races once took place. Your tour ends here, from where you can continue exploring on your own.
Optional upgrade to the Ancient Rome and Colosseum Tour: Underground Chambers, Arena and Upper Tier (3.5 hours)
For a more thorough exploration of the Colosseum, select the upgrade option when booking for a tour that includes access to the third tier, the arena floor and the underground chambers—sections of the Colosseum that are either newly opened or typically closed to the general public. You’ll see more than most visitors do.
Walk around the reconstructed floor of the arena, where the gladiators once dueled in bloody battles, and look down through the gaps into the underground chambers. Then make your way below ground to explore the chambers themselves, checking out pits where wild animals like tigers and lions were held, before heading up to the third tier for a panoramic view into the Colosseum and out to Palatine Hill. Your tour ends with a visit to the Roman Forum, as described in the standard tour.
It's quite amazing to see these magnificent structures of another era existing quite literally in a lively buzzing Rome. It shows the machoism of those ancient Roman's. Italy is beautiful. People upright, common men.
We were left speechless with amazement as we travelled back in time to Ancient Rome. Elena (an archeologist) was our guide, and provided an ongoing wealth of information as we moved through the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, and the Roman Forum. She was also able to help us use our imagination to see a glimpse of life as it was in that time period. Highly recommend this tour for this reason. We had no problem with all the stair climbing, uneven terrain (these are ruins after all) but be prepared for this no matter who you tour with. Didn’t give a 5 star rating because although it was titled “skip the line” I’m not sure which line we skipped. We waited almost an hour to enter the Colosseum (the first stop). Perhaps it would have taken longer if we were not part of this tour?
We started nice and early when the sun wasn't too hot yet. Earphones and microphone receiver box was provided for each attendee. Francesca O. was our amazing tour guide. She was friendly, so energetic, and had great knowledge and enthusiasm for the history of the Colosseum and Forum. She also answered our questions eagerly and with good information. She also gave us good tips on where to go for better views and cheaper stops for lunch after the tour was finished. I have heard from others who have visited the Colosseum that it was overrated but I felt it was great! The tour definitely made it a special visit.
This was an absolute highlight. It was our first time taking a tour of anything like this and we could not have been happier.
Sarafina was incredibly knowledgable and passionate about the Colosseum and Roman Forum, and always made sure we had shade where possible. Would definitely recommend!
Plenty of walking but with our competent guide we learned so much about the history of the Colosseum, the Forum and Palatine Park with added interesting asides thrown in. The headsets supplied whilst not top quality, they did the job well enough. A word of warning, make sure you have something to drink during the walking the autumn heat
