Choose from a morning or afternoon tour and make your own way to the designated meeting spot in La Jolla. There, your guide fits your with the equipment you'll use during your time on the water.
When ready, an easy stroll of three blocks brings you to the beach at La Jolla Cove. While still on the sand, your experienced guide teaches you the the basics of paddling a kayak and snorkeling. Receive a safety briefing, then it's time to hit the water in your single or tandem kayak. Keep your eyes open for harbor seals, dolphins and sea lions frolicking in the waves of the protected La Jolla Ecological Reserve.
Practice your paddling and steering technique in the calm waters of the cove before following your guide through some of the seven sea caves that make up La Jolla Caves. The caves are situated in the sandstone cliffs of the San Diego coast, and six of the seven caves are accessible only by water. Hear the fascinating history of these caves, which have been used for smuggling people into the United States and bringing in alcohol during Prohibition.
Then get your snorkel gear on and hop into the warm clear waters for a closer look at the marine critters. If conditions permit, you may be able to swim into the caves themselves. Leopard sharks, bat rays, garibaldi fish, guitar fish, sheephead fish, rock lobster, pelicans and cormorants are some of the commonly seen animals in this area.
Your guide will swim with your group and ensure that you stay safe. Feel free to bring a waterproof camera to capture photos of the amazing array of sea creatures.
End your 2.5-hour kayak and snorkel tour back at La Jolla Cove Beach.
