I have lived in Sydney for a decade but have never been to Newtown. Ive always wanted to explore because Ive heard so much about it. This tour was such a great introduction to this hip suburb and its Street Art! We booked the 2-hour Street Art Tour but ended up being upgraded to the 3-hour Inner West Walking Tour. Melinda, our guide is also the author of the book, Street Art of Sydneys Inner West and she is an authority on all things Newtown. She walked us through the hidden alleyways and car parks splashed with vibrant colours - amazing pieces of art! We scoured the neighbourhood where both residences and commercial buildings had graffiti. At the same time, we learned more about the unique and artistic culture of Newtown. We became aware of the councils efforts in protecting the art pieces and encouraging artists to showcase their work. What a vibrant place with a rich open-air gallery! The weekend markets were on at that time and we found a lady selling graffiti chips fashioned into jewellery. Melinda taught us street art lingo, types of paints, names of famous and notorious street artists, as well as the stories and messages behind the pieces of street art. Some were massive, like the Save the Corals piece of Phibs and George Rose which ran through one entire block as well as the back of the building. We were told stories about the most photographed street art in Sydney I had a dream referencing a speech by Martin Luther King. The suburb probably has most population of artists in NSW as well as an eclectic mix of immigrants and cultures that makes Newtown such an interesting place. Not only was it about street art, we were shown popular restaurants, parks and architecture. Melindas enthusiasm and passion for Newtown is inspirational. Personally, I had a new perspective and appreciation of graffiti.
