Private Guide: Best way to see and learn about Toledo
, Jul 2019
As part of our trip to Madrid we wanted to do a day trip to Toledo. We opted for the 3-hour private tour bought through Viator and were lucky to get Enrique as our guide. Taking the train was easy and allowed us to quickly get to Toledo while getting exposure to Europe's incredible high speed train systems.
Our 3-hour tour:
Since this was our first time in Toledo, our guide recommended, St Mary's Cathedral, Santo Tome Church and the St Mary the White Synagogue. Our guide Enrique, was one of the best. Not only did Enrique have much local knowledge, he provide deep historical context into all the site. Both my wife and teenager daughter we amazed how Enrique described the Cathedral and one of the painting in the Santo Tome Church. We loved learning about all the historical aspects of Toledo as part of the history of Spain and even when the Romans first came.
Getting to Toledo
We purchase a round trip train ticket (MADRID-P.ATOCHA to TOLEDO) ahead of time. The train was very easy and only 40 mins. From the station we walked about 20min to Zocodover Square to meet our guide, Enrique. The walk felt more like a hike as Toledo is high up on the hill. Good news is that you will get your stair workout in.
- While we walked to the square, you could easily take a taxi
- Each site costs ~3 euros per person
- With a private guide you can pre-arrange the sites to see
- 3 hour tour felt right and allowed us enough time to walk around afterwards
- Toledo has a lot of winding streets where you can get lost if you do not have a map or google maps turned on
- Toledo has a Starbucks for your teens with free wifi
Sonia was fabulous. She took cues from what our teenage boys seemed interested and kept everything relevant enough for them to stay engaged. It was apparent that she was highly educated and informative on the history and culture of Toledo. A wonderful way to see Toledo in 1/2 a day. We fell in love!
We had a wonderful time with Irene in Toledo. She is SO knowledgeable about the city having been born there, gone to school there and living there now. Her knowledge of history and culture were fabulous and it was very comfortable spending time with her!!! Would do a tour with her again!!!
