We begin with an 8am departure from York city centre and travel north past the city of Durham (where we may call in to collect more passengers). We continue north to Newcastle, where we turn west to follow the route of Hadrian's Wall. Our first stop on the wall is a brief photo opportunity at Heddon on the Wall, where there is a short stretch of Hadrian's Wall on the edge of the village.
We continue west along the line of the wall to Housesteads, one of the most impressive forts built along Hadrian's Wall. You'll have chance to explore the ruins of the fort and chance to stand on Hadrian's Wall (the only place where you are allowed to climb on the ancient monument). You can also discover the museum at Housesteads dedicated to the history of the wall and the region's Roman past.
Walking Option
Those who wish to walk a section of Hadrian's Wall will set of with the walking guide for a moderate walk of about 90 - 120 minutes, a route which takes us to Sycamore Gap, a beautiful location on Hadrian's Wall and one of the most iconic and recognisable places on the wall. We continue from the wall to the village of Once Brewed and down to Vindolanda, site of the Roman Army Museum.
Non-walking Option
Those who don't walk the Wall will travel further west to Birdoswald, another fort on Hadrian's Wall and site of the longest stretch of exisiting Wall along its entire length. Here you can walk alongside the wall and visit Birdoswald Roman Fort. You will then rejoin the walking group at Vindolanda to visit the Roman Army Museum.
At Vindolanda both the walking and non-walking groups will have time to explore the Roman Army Museum and to enjoy the full site before our time at Hadrian’s Wall concludes.
Leaving Vindolanda, we’ll begin our journey back home, travelling past Newcastle. We’ll pause for a photo stop at the Angel of the North, Anthony Gormley’s imposing statue, before continuing past Durham (dropping off any Durham passengers) and returning to York.
