The Basics

Seeing the entire Great Barrier Reef could take weeks, but the most important scuba diving and snorkeling spots include the Saxon, Hastings, and Norman reefs in the outer Great Barrier Reef. Join one of the area’s many snorkeling and scuba dive–centric cruises or day trips, or turn your trip into an educational opportunity by getting your PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) certificate.

Alternatively, explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site from above with a cruise in a catamaran or a glass-bottom boat. Scenic helicopter flights offer an overview and will give you a sense of the immensity of this remarkable ecosystem.

The best way to see the Great Barrier Reef
My son and I had a wonderful time. We were so excited to dive at the Great Barrier Reef; it was our trip's highlight. Even though the weather was stormy and the seas rough, the crew did an exceptional job throughout the day, making sure everyone had a great time. We did the dives with Nils and had a great time, seeing lots of fish! As the last of the privately-owned dive cruises, I would highly recommend the tour.

This was an amazing experience, the boat was clean and the crew were incredibly nice and helpful. To scuba dive the Great Barrier Reef was definitely a bucket list item, and the staff helped it to be one of my favorite experiences I’ve had.

Seastar Luxury Outer Great Barrier Reef Island and Reef Tour from Cairns
This was our second trip to the Great Barrier Reef on the Seastar. Attentive, friendly, patient, accommodating crew made the snorkeling experience magical. The first stop at Michaelmas Cay presents newbies the opportunity to ease into shallow water. Everyone on board can spend time on the cay and glass bottom boat. Lovely tea after boarding and delicious lunch provided. Passenger limit of 36 makes for a more personalized experience. Highly recommend this reef tour!

Great Barrier Reef Scenic Helicopter Tour and Cruise from Cairns
Definitely go to the reef and I have to say this boat was by far the nicest in Cairns. Not to mention the crew were spectacular. If do this - make sure to do the helicopter ride as well! That was the icing on the cake. Unreal to see the great barrier reef from above!

Full-Day Cruise Tour to Frankland Islands Great Barrier Reef
It's such a wonderful experience with a great tour guide, Louisa, who took us for the snorkeling around the Reef and showed us many things that we would have missed if we are doing it on our own. Highly recommended trip for the Great Barrier Reef.

Great Barrier Reef Snorkeling and Diving Cruise from Cairns
The Great Barrier Reef is amazing. Terrible to see all the damage and I can’t believe how other snorkelers step on the coral, kick with their flippers. The crew should do a brief discussion on reef protection during safety briefing. It might help. The crew do an amazing job of handling the 150+ people on the boat. The food was good.

3-Day Best of Cairns Combo: The Daintree Rainforest, Great Barrier Reef, and Kuranda
This is an awesome, action packed three days in Cairns. Our favorite part was the Daintree Rainforest Tour. It was so much more than just Daintree. Our guide, Steve made the very long day super enjoyable. Make sure you bring motion sickness pills for the great barrier reef tour, and lots of sunscreen. All of the meals provided were hearty and tasty. You could not ask for a better way to be introduced to Cairns. Cannot recommend enough. 11 stars!

Great Barrier Reef Snorkeling and Diving Cruise from Cairns
Excellent trip to GBR. Boat was huge, clean, not too full. The snorkel and dive equipment was clean and new. Loved the small groups for diving, it was just the two of us on our dive. The staff were exceptional. Loved our day on the reef.
