The Basics

The Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site is most often visited on half- or full-day trips from Munich. Visitors to the memorial site can expect to see the former compound (now an exhibition center), and learn about Europe in World War II, the Holocaust, and the role Dachau played in this important chapter in German history. Whether seen independently or on a guided private or small-group tour from Munich, the guard houses and administration buildings, reconstructed barracks, cells, and crematorium offer ample opportunity for reflection.

Half day tour to Dachau

Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site Tour from Munich by Train
I liked the fact that the group was a small group of 11. I thought Jeff was a knowledgeable and friendly tour guide and felt the cost of the tour was reasonable. I was disappointed that time did not allow us to see the movie presentation and that the COVID-19 issues closed several of the buildings to the public. I recommend Jeff and this tour to those interested in visiting Dachau and learning many interesting facts about the former concentration camp.

Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site Tour from Munich by Train
The overall story of Hitlers brutal vision came through the perspective and breadth of knowledge demonstrated by our guide Jeff. The sheer horror of Dachau is hard to convey but the expert guidance made the sad story come alive.

Somber and a great learning experience. Our tour guide was very informative and knowledgeable. Some of the facts were very hard to digest, but our tour guide was very gracious in giving us space to take these painful events. A very worthwhile trip. I highly recommend it.

Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site And Third Reich Day Tour From Munich
Fascinating tour on one of the saddest eras in our history. Allen (tour guide) was a wealth of information, respectfully detailing the events that took place in Dachau not too long ago. The smaller group made Q & A time during the tour much easier. Allen was very approachable and easy to talk to.

Munich WWII Combo: Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site and Third Reich Walking Tour
This combo tour was a full day, but completely worth it. Mat (our guide for the Dachau Memorial site) and Kevin (our guide for the Third Reich tour) were both very knowledgeable. I recommend taking this tour (or at least one of them if you do not have time for both).

Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Walking Tour with Guide from Munich by Train
Our tour guide was Cornelia and she was amazing! I felt like I was learning secrets about WWII! She truly went above and beyond with the history of Hitler and Post WWI Germany. Her delivery was elegant and unbiased. I would honestly book the same tour again just because it was so amazing!

Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site Tour from Munich by Train
Eric was a great tour guide, full of knowledge and funny too. Dachau definitely makes you think. Easy trip from the station to the camp. Lots of walking so wear comfortable shoes and bring water because there isn’t anywhere to get anything.

When to Get There

The camp is open daily from 9am to 5pm year-round, aside from Christmas Eve (December 24). While some exhibits are indoors, many consider the summer months of May to October the best time to visit as much of the site is outdoors. The memorial tends to be busiest around noon.

Exhibitions at the Dachau Memorial Site

Set in what was once a maintenance building, Dachau's main permanent exhibition covers the former Nazi concentration camp's horrific history and sheds light on the lives of the site's prisoners with firsthand accounts, biographies, and artifacts. Elsewhere on the Dachau grounds are exhibits in other original buildings displaying bunkers, model barracks, a crematorium, and a gas chamber, although evidence indicates that the gas chamber was never used to murder prisoners.
