Devaraja Market Tours

Devaraja Market
Devaraja Market is a bustling open-air shopping area full of colorful stalls that are loaded to the brim with fruits, vegetables, and flowers, along with incense, coffee beans, and heaping piles of spices. Though it's a great place to shop, Devaraja Market is equally worth visiting just to take photos and people watch.

The Basics
This market features row upon row of produce, and it’s worth visiting for its colors and aromas alone. It's a popular stop on Mysore city tours, and you may find yourself shopping for ingredients here if you sign up for a South Indian cooking class. Traveling with a guide or as part of an organized tour takes some the worry out of navigating the market, especially for first-time visitors.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • This colorful market is an absolute must-visit for photographers, but make sure to ask people before snapping their photos.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to do a bit of walking.
  • Allergy sufferers may want to take a pill before entering as there will be lots of pollen in the air.

How to Get There
The market is located just north of the sprawling Mysore Palace, an 8-minute walk past the Choti Ghadiyar clock tower. It's easy to get to the market on foot. If you arrive by taxi or rickshaw, ask to be dropped off at the edge of the market and walk in through one of the multiple entrances.

When to Get There
The market opens daily at 7am and stays open until 8:30pm. It's at its busiest first thing in the morning and again in the evening, when locals come to shop for dinner ingredients. It can get especially crowded during religious festivals, when flowers are in high demand for use in ritual worship.

Marigolds in India
Marigolds are found throughout India, and you'll likely see the golden-hued blossoms more than any other type of flower. They're frequently used to make garlands that are offered to idols at temples, or to people during special celebrations or as a welcome gift. Truck drivers frequently hang them from their rearview mirrors, both for fragrance (which keeps bugs away) and for good luck.
