A favorite among college students from the many schools in the area as well as well-heeled Delhiites looking to shop, the M Block Market is an upscale shopping complex in the Greater Kailash neighborhood dominated by retail shops selling international brands. With plenty of eateries and cafés, it’s also a good spot for coffee or a meal.
The Basics
The Greater Kailash M Block Market is a great place to visit if you're looking for upmarket Western and traditional clothing and accessories or simply want a glimpse of middle-class urban Delhi life. Instead of open-air stalls and narrow lanes lined with goods, expect to see organized storefronts laid out in a rectangular formation around a tiny, well-manicured central park. It’s popular with locals and expats alike, and a few shopping tours stop here.
Things to Know Before You Go
- If you’re coming by taxi, ask to be dropped off outside the market and walk in, as traversing the parking lot by car can take a long time.
- It’s okay to bargain at street-side stalls, but the brick-and-mortar shops here are generally fixed price.
- Shops flank the parking lot on an elevated marble walkway that can get dangerously slippery when wet.
How to Get There
The Greater Kailash M Block Market is located in South Delhi, about a 20- to 30-minute drive, traffic permitting, from Connaught Place. The nearest Delhi Metro stop is Kailash Colony, a 10-minute walk away; cycle rickshaws usually wait at the metro to transport travelers to the market, which cuts the journey time in half.
When to Get There
M Block Market is best visited on weekdays during the day, particularly if you want to beat the huge crowds that flock here on weekends. Evenings are best for people watching, though the place can get crowded. All but a handful of shops and cafés are closed on Tuesday, the market’s official “off” day.
Prince’s Paan Corner
The busiest part of M-Block Market is usually Prince’s Paan Corner, on the far end of the market. Along with selling all sorts of digestive candies and breath fresheners in bulk, Prince’s has a popular snack stall serving up traditional Delhi chaat (street-food snacks) to large crowds of South Delhi shoppers.
