Join in Pico’s long whale-watching heritage on a wildlife cruise with a company that’s been exploring the Azorean seas for more than 30 years. Onboard marine biologists help you spot and identify some of the more than two dozen different species of whales and dolphins that are frequently seen around the island, while environmental measures promote an eco-friendly voyage.
Ready to swim and listen to these beautiful creatures? This adventure starts in Lajes do Pico harbor on a zodiac boat in groups of a few people so it can be done safely and comfortably. On land, you will have a briefing done by a marine biologist or a nature guide that will explain some details about what to expect. They will explain how to get into the water, how to interact with the dolphins and how to use the snorkel mask. Normally in each tour, you can dive two or three times. This is definitely a unique experience.
Fortunately, whaling has been forbidden in 1986 in the Azores. However, it moulded the islands’ history for more than 100 years and nowadays it represents an important part of the local patrimony. The Azorean people used to hunt whales to survive, the hunt was always « manual ». During this tour, you will have the opportunity to discover the deepest secrets of this practice and how it ended.
During the boat trip, you will have the opportunity to watch some of the 28 cetacean species that can be found in the Azores.

Meeting at the "Mountain House", if you do not want "transfer included", it is time to check if we all have the proper equipment, protection, food, water and of course, the camera.
Our guide will accompany you along a trail, much of it in very irregular volcanic rock, which will require some effort and care. . Reaching the summit, the effort is rewarded by breathtaking, breathtaking landscapes.
First the crater, then the last stage: the Piquinho. This, with its 70 m high, will give more "fight" but inevitable to achieve the goal: 2351 m altitude, the highest point of the island of Pico, the Azores and Portugal.
