Begin your tour with pickup from your Cape Town hotel prior to an 8 a.m. tour start time. Ride past vineyards and rural scenery along the Stellenbosch Wine Route to the Zevenwacht Wine Estate, located roughly 20 minutes outside of Cape Town. Upon reaching the small but vibrant town of Stellenbosch, enjoy your first tasting at a wine cellar. This region is known for growing a wide variety of grapes, including chenin blanc, pinotage, shiraz, and méthode cap classique for sparkling wine. Then, continue to the old Huguenot village of Franschhoek. Partake in the town’s artisanal culinary tradition with a wine, cheese, and biltong tasting at Marianne Wine Estate while admiring views of the countryside. Head to your final tasting in Paarl, passing Drakenstein Prison where Nelson Mandela carried out a portion of his sentence for campaigning against apartheid along the way. Tour the town to learn more about Afrikaner culture and see a monument dedicated to the Huguenots before tasting wine at Laborie Wine Farms. Return to your hotel in Cape Town at the end of your trip. We had a great experience with this tour! Our guide, Franco, was knowledgeable, polite and friendly, and he created a laid back atmosphere for all 9 guests. We toured three wineries and stopped for coffee and a lunch. Hotel pickup was incredibly convenient!
Ordering the tour proved to be difficult, everything worked as expected through internet, but I could not pay the trip as usual. Instead I had to phone a service number and after some 20 minutes everything was in order. The tour was more or less as expected, the guide was good, his english very good. Two wine tastings were organised in a normal manner, the third "wine tasting" took place on board the train, apparently someone tried to tell us something about this small amount of white wine served on the train. The audio system was lousy, we heard absolutely nothing. Totally worthless as a wine tasting, but a rather nice train ride.
We were collected from our hotel by our guide for our day tour of the wine vineyards named Basil. He started by giving us the background history as we drove out of Capetown. Our party of 7 people were surprised to learn in his 61 years, he had never left Capetown.
We visited 3 vineyards and I sampled 15 wines. Very nice scenery in the wine growing areas.
I would recommend this tour.
This tour was by far my favorite during my visit to South Africa. The vineyards we visited were top notch and I really impressed by the wine/food samples. Our tour guide provided a lot of information about this region and I would not hesitate to recommend him to others. If you want to see a beautiful, historic area of the country, as well as looking for a tour which is value-for-money, this is it.
We had a great day going round the winary's with fellow passengers. Our tour guide Maxwell i thjnk was marvellous and very informative, he took pictures of the company we were with at each winery. The wines were great and the discription of each wine gjven by staff of the winery was also informative. All in all a great day.
This tour is not executed as presented by Viator. Seems to be the local tour operator's choice on what towns and wineries are visited. We did not go to Paarl, did not tour the town, did not visit the Huguenot Memorial, did not visit Lowrie. The aspects of the tour that were similar not identical were enjoyable but if you are looking to visit certain locations as I was when I booked, consider another tour. This one is deceptively advertised. The local tour company blames Viator and Vistor blames the local tour company. Best to avoid and find a more trustworthy set of providers.
Overall I enjoyed this tour. We visited 3 wineries, all of which were very nice. Stellenbosch is a lovely little town, would have liked to have had some more time there. There was plenty of driving but that was to be expected.
