Meet your guide at the entrance of Horton Plains National Park in the early morning. Before setting off for your mountain adventure you’ll get a briefing of the trip’s route, along with necessary safety information. A qualified first aid officer will also accompany your trip as an added precaution.
Start your trek inside this protected natural area, known to be one of the most famous sites in Sri Lanka for viewing endangered wildlife. Among the creatures you might spot during your walk are the wild boar, fishing cat, sambar, chevrotain, and purple-faced langur. There’s also a wide variety of birds that call Horton Plains home, covering a number of rare and endemic species. As you walk through this area, you’ll also spot a number of springs, which serve as the origin for many of Sri Lanka’s rivers.
After passing through Horton Plains National Park you’ll begin your ascent of Kirigalpotta Mountain. Celebrated as the tallest peak in Sri Lanka open to the public, you’ll pass amidst a series of bogs, high undergrowth, swamps, slippery rocks, and fast-flowing rivers. The walk will last for 4.3 miles (7 kilometers) and will take approximately five to six hours to complete. You’ll stop every mile (1.5 kilometer) for a break and an included energy bar and water. The hike is considered to be treacherous and it best left for more experienced hikers. One out of every nine participants does not reach the summit as a result.
You’ll eventually reach the peak of this challenging summit by around noon, pausing to enjoy the panoramic views of the island below. You’ll also take this time to enjoy an included picnic lunch, featuring pasta, boiled eggs, fried sausages, and tropical fruit. After a break, return by the same trail, reaching the trail head in early evening.
