Start with 7:30am pickup at your Colombo hotel, then begin the 1- to 1.5-hour trip to Bentota, where the first stop of the day is the Lunuganga estate, a luxurious country retreat created by Sri Lankan architect Sir Geoffrey Bawa. You’ll have two hours to explore the estate before continuing to the next stop of the day, Kosgoda Turtle hatchery.
Upon arrival at the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery (at roughly 11:20am), you can pick up the baby sea turtles hatchlings, and see how the hatchery treats adults for illness and injuries. Following the hatchery visit, you’ll have an hour of free time for lunch (own expense); the driver can help choose a restaurant that suits your tastes.
Make the final stop of the day at the Madu River, arriving at 1:40pm for a 2-hour boat tour. Watch for birds, crocodiles, and water snakes along the river, see a historic Buddhist monastery, and meet cinnamon harvesters—if desired, you can stop to buy fresh cinnamon at excellent prices. Another optional stop is the Madu River “fish massage parlor,” where you can submerge your feet in a school of “massage fish” (own expense).
Following the boat trip, begin the return trip to Colombo, where this tour concludes with drop-off at your hotel at roughly 6pm.
