Overview

Explore Slovenia’s lesser-known sights on this off-the-beaten-path day trip departing from Ljubljana. Join a small group and an expert guide as you set off for frozen-in-time medieval towns, hidden lakes, ancient castles, snow-capped peaks and more. Discover the Podsreda Castle and Planina Cave, but keep an open mind, as day-to-day itineraries fluctuate depending on group preferences and other factors. To ensure a quality experience, this tour is limited to eight people. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, as are all entrance fees.
  • Discover Slovenia’s lesser-known natural, cultural and historical highlights
  • Visit sights like Hell Cave (Jama Pekel) or Stična Cistercian Abbey
  • Get a taste of local life at traditional craft or music festivals
  • Sample regional delicacies and wine at a village market or winery
  • Enjoy an itinerary adapted to suit the season, weather and preferences of the group
  • Receive personalized attention from the guide on this small-group tour, limited to eight people
Your tour kicks off with a convenient pickup at your central Ljubljana hotel. Meet your guide and driver, then buckle into your minivan and set off to explore Slovenia’s under-the-radar treasures. On your way, your guide will discuss the itinerary for the day, which will partly depend on the weather conditions, seasons, and suggestions from you and the group.
Admire the scenery, as the view out your window quickly changes from Ljubljana’s Baroque-era architecture, to verdant bucolic hillsides. Embrace serendipity as your day unfolds before you. Maybe you will stop at the Mayor’s Cave, one of Slovenia’s 10,000 caves, or at Županova jama. Other fascinating caves, riddled with stalactites and pools include Planina Cave and Hell Cave (Jama Pekel).
Keep an eye out for impromptu festivals that typically highlight traditional music and crafts. Local markets are also great pit-stops, as they offer an opportunity to taste regional foods and interact with locals. Many villages also offer ways to learn about iron forging and lace-making.
Maybe next you will explore one of the many castles in the countryside, like Žužemberk Castle or Turjak Castle. Podsreda Castle is one of the best preserved medieval castles in Slovenia. Next, it might be on to a Slovenian church, like Stična Cistercian Abbey, the country’s oldest monastery.
Unwind at one of Slovenia’s wineries or stop for views of lakes and waterfalls along your journey. There is no shortage of places to discover in this small but bountiful country. Come evening, enjoy a convenient drop-off at your central Ljubljana hotel.

A most enjoyable, interesting day with a great guide who was knowledgeable, friendly and good company. It was really good to see places in Slovenia that we didn't know about but we're glad to see.

This should be a half day trip only. Visiting Svenica Castle was amazing and it's location is stunning. I think the wine tasting was average ... Two wines and not the best. A visit to the castle followed by lunch with wine would work so much better. Driving around just to fill in the day was a real disappointment.

Urska was a fantastic guide, Slovenia is such a beautiful country and it is really great to experience sections that are less touristy.

A lovely day out! They really aren't kidding about tailoring it to you, although since no-one actually had any opening suggestions it was a little quiet at the start, we then headed out to the wine region in the east and visited a number of interesting towns and suchlike, with a final stop for a swim.

The trip was to Triglav National Park to get a glimpse of Julian Alps and then subsequently to a Park in Slovenia. The trip was phenomenal and breathtaking. It was very challenging for me personally to climb up for around 2.5 Kms but the guide Urska was kind enough to carry my belongings and help me overcome my health constraints. The trip was amazing.

I liked 2 of the 3 things that were on offer. I wouldn't have chosen the Idrja mine tour for myself. I would have preferred a medieval castle to the mine. I was impressed with the Franja Hospital and the location of the gorge. I enjoyed Skofia Loca.

The travelers don't choose what they want to see as they might not know. The tour leader chooses. So you need to change the write up. I let the Slovenian Explorer people know. It was a nicely paced tour.

Had an amazing experience on this tour!!! My wife, 4 year old daughter and I had spent over a week exploring Slovenia on our own. We realized early on that there were tons of hidden gems that we were going to miss out on because we simply did not know where to look.
Tina did a fantastic job constructing an Off the Beaten Path itinerary specifically for our family. We had such a good experience, that I booked the tour a second time and enjoyed a completely different itinerary on my own.
The tours were highlights of our trip, and really helped fill in gaps in our own exploring by introducing us to hidden gems we never would have seen otherwise.
Highly recommend.

I enjoyed the idea of the trip, though you are taking a certain risk if you go for it, as there is no prior announcement where they will really take you. The description hinted on a cave and a castle to be honest, I hoped it would be one of those two options, but we ended up in a little mine town Idria and visited a mercury mine. It was very interesting, though I myself would not have voted for it, and there was not discussion of different option as indicated in the description. But to be fair, it was around Christmas, and I could imagine, options were limited anyways. I was very happy, that the tour took place though it was just two people on it perfect number of course, from a traveller's point of view. I learnt lots about mercury, and the scenery of the town is impressive. The guide Tine was really nice and knowledgeable. I especially enjoyed the little sidetrip to a hidden small lake which looks magical and hides a depth of many hundred metres. Really beautiful. Travelling can be a box of chocolates, you never know what you will get.
