The Basics

Waiheke Island is most often visited on day tours from Auckland. The most popular experiences include food tours, wine tasting excursions, adventure tours—and simply spending time on one of the many sandy ocean beaches. Wine enthusiasts should choose a wine-tasting tour to visit some of the nearly 30 wineries, many of which have locavore restaurants attached and make for the perfect way to enjoy a vineyard lunch. Adventure and culture also abound, with ziplining, hiking, and eco tours available for exploring the island’s lush forests and nature preserves, plus ancient Maori terraces and cooking pits to be discovered on cultural bike tours.

Full-Day Tour of Waiheke Island with Wine Tastings
The guide was very good about explaining the history of the island and the background of the winemakers. We took a couple of stops for pictures at the beach and mountainside. The wine tastings were perfect and the weather was beautiful.

A unique wine tasting experience from a small family owned operator.

Full-Day Tour of Waiheke Island with Wine Tastings
Our first visit to Waiheke Island and once we got to the island it was fantastic. One strong word of caution that is not reflective of this tour but the ferry service to get to the tour. In high season the ferry service is chaotic so get your tickets before you go to get in line. Second get to the line at least an hour ahead of time but I would suggest 75-90 minutes. Based on the ticket agent suggesting we get in line 40 minutes ahead of time we got there 55 minutes early and we missed our 10am ferry. The line was LONG and it is not reserved times. It’s first come first serve. Fortunately the ferry service added a ferry and we left around 1030 otherwise we would have been on the 11 and they even cautioned we might be on the 12. With that said the tour operator was fantastic. They are a small family owned operation and are good at what they do. We called and they adjusted the pickup twice to fit the situation. This made a frustrating situation bearable and ensured we got the full tour in without feeling rushed. Thanks much for being so flexible. They picked three fabulous wineries but Stony Ridge and Thomas were really outstanding. Bought a lot of wine. Also had lunch at Thomas. The island is beautiful and we might consider staying on the island next time for a different experience. Ferry ride home had no drama. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a nice day tasting good wine in a relaxed environment.

A must do on Waiheke

Full-Day Tour of Waiheke Island with Wine Tastings
This is definitely a must do for people staying in Auckland and want to see the island of Waiheke in a day! Our tour guide was very lovely and full of information from start to finish, Nicki had lots of recommendations for things to do and see and was a joy to talk to during the tour. We were taken to three distinct wineries that all had something to offer for a wine lover. We only had so much time in Auckland so it was nice to be able to see everything Waiheke had to offer in a day, would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to visit the island!

Full-Day Tour of Waiheke Island with Wine Tastings
Myself and my partner booked this tour for a weekend away and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was just the two of us on the tour so it was very personal. Nicky was accommodating and an entertaining tour guide. We stopped at the local Saturday market in the morning, visited 3 unique vineyards for tastings and stopped at a number of popular spots on the island.

Enjoyed the chance to see a little more of the island than on the typical big tour. A great way to spend a day away from the little one.
