The Basics

Las Ramblas, Ciutat Vella’s main thoroughfare, separates El Raval from the Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic), a popular starting point for a walking tour of the city. Often covered in walking, biking, and Segway tours, attractions in this part of town include historic Plaça del Rei, the 14th-century Royal Palace (Palau Reial Major), Barcelona Cathedral, the glitzy shopping street of Portal de l’Àngel, lively La Boqueria food market, and several Gaudí masterpieces, including Güell Palace (Palau Güell).

East of the Barri Gòtic are the fashionable district of La Ribera and the small neighborhood of El Born, also home to a number of popular attractions. Key sights include the Palace of Catalan Music (Palau de la Música Catalana), a UNESCO World Heritage Site designed by modernist architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner; the Gothic Santa Maria del Mar Cathedral; the Picasso Museum; and the vast Ciutadella Park (Parc de la Ciutadella), the city’s largest green space.

Great experience and very friendly guide
The guide was very friendly, helpful and provided us with all around tour of this incredible city. There is some room for improvement in terms of organization of the breaks and the upfront information about the tickets, but everything else was really good.

Barcelona Old Town and Gothic Quarter Walking Tour
Enjoyed the guide Janna, and her personalized stories and great information about the area. We would suggest don't tell people to be there 30 minutes before, as 5 or 10 minutes would be early enough. Also guide should have a distinguishing sign. Otherwise great!

Gaudi's art was magnificent. That guide, Armando, spoke good English, but grasped for words on occasion. We had 9 people in 9 passenger Mercedes in van;7 tourists a driver and Armando. we were gone from 9 to 6, a little long. The lunch was dutch, and rushed. We saw a lot on one day.

Barcelona Old Town and Gothic Quarter Walking Tour
Loved learning about Old Barcino - the Roman name for Barcelona. Laura, our guide, obviously loves her city and does a good job of imparting not only the history but also the culture of the Catalan people and their struggles to maintain their language and history. She also recommended a great restaurant for our lunch.

Barcelona in One Day: Sagrada Familia, Park Guell & Old Town with Hotel Pick-up
Our tour guide Angie was the best. She took a lot of extra time to show us things I’ve never seen on another Barcelona tour and also explained the history in detail - even whipping out her iPad to show historical pictures. We covered a lot of ground and lunch was fabulous! Can’t recommend enough.

Barcelona in One Day: Sagrada Familia, Park Guell & Old Town with Hotel Pick-up
The tour was very well organised. Our guide, Daniel was very punctual, had good knowledge and made us familiar with the relevant history of the areas we visited. When it started raining he arranged umberallas for all the group members, which was very thoughtful of him. Overall a fun filled day and recommend this tour.

When to Get There

You haven’t really experienced the Old Town until you’ve seen it by day and at night. Come during daylight hours to see the street performers along Las Ramblas. In the evenings, head to the narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter or El Born for tapas and wine bars.

L’Eixample, the Other Half of Barcelona’s City Center

If there’s another neighborhood that can rival the Old Town in terms of importance to the Barcelona psyche, it’s L’Eixample. Added in the late 19th century, this modernista enlargement of the city was and is home to several prominent attractions, including the Sagrada Familia, Casa Batlló, La Pedrera (Casa Milà), and Passeig de Gràcia.
