Cangshan Mountain Tours

Cangshan Mountain
Famous for its colorful azalea flowers, Cangshan Mountain rises over the city of Dali and the shores of Lake Erhai beyond. Visitors can either hike or take a cable car up the mountain, where a paved road leads down past various points of interest. From Zhonghe Temple at the top of the cable car, various hiking trails branch out into the surrounding forests toward smaller temples, pools, waterfalls and scenic areas.

Cangshan Mountain is also a famous producer of a variety of marble called Cangshan Stone, recognizable by the unique patterns in the smooth rock. Local artists carve the marble into animals, people or natural scenes — popular souvenirs available on the mountain or in shops in Dali Old Town.

Cangshan Mountain: River Gorge Hike (1 Day)

Cangshan Mountain: River Gorge Hike (1 Day)

After hiking steadily uphill for about an hour through terraced fields and tea plantations, we come to the entrance of the gorge. We continue along a small trail that traverses the side of the gorge for another 30 minutes before finally coming to the river. We soon arrive at the first of many small but majestic waterfalls with crystal clear pools that are perfect for cooling off in during summer. After hiking beside the river past a series of waterfalls for about an hour, we come to the most spectacular part of the entire gorge, a narrow channel with high cliffs nicknamed the “Cathedral”. The walls of the cliffs are smooth, undulating and completely vertical, even overhanging. Much like a typical “slot canyon”, they were worn smooth over eons by rushing water, which gives them a very interesting appearance. This is the narrowest part of the entire gorge (only a few metres wide at its narrowest point), and the cliffs are at least 30 metres high, so the view is quite stunning.

Cangshan Mountain: Black Dragon Pools and Summit Hike (1 Day)

Cangshan Mountain: Black Dragon Pools and Summit Hike (1 Day)

This hike is only recommended for people who are thoroughly acclimatized and in excellent shape. We don't want to candy-coat it: this is a grueling hike with 2000 metres of elevation gain in a single day, but if you enjoy pushing yourself to the limits, then you'll love it! If you want to enjoy this hike without pushing your limits to the max though, we recommend doing it as a two day camping trip. For the camping trip, the hiking itinerary is the same but instead of hiking to the summit in one day, we camp at 3780 metres the first day, then continue up to the summit at 4030 metres the next morning. The main benefits of the camping trip are that you get to camp in a beautiful, high-altitude alpine meadow and rest for the night before continuing up to the summit the next morning. The other benefit is that you get to spend more time on the summit than you would if you did this hike in just one day. Another variation of the camping itinerary is to add the summit ridge traverse!
